Which major is the most respectful of the course design?
« on: June 16, 2005, 11:39:55 AM »
Examples…Augusta, and the addition of rough/lengthening etc… has this detracted from the original design premise...

Think the U.S. open at Pinehurst…. Narrow fairways…

Historically, what major do you feel upholds the original design intent of the course it is played over?

The Open at St.Andrews is probably the best.

Perhaps only be virtue of its time proximity of the major and when the course was actually designed/built, I'd say the recent PGA at Whistling Straits played and stood up as Dye envisioned.  The only minor tweaking was bringing the fairway cuts in on #s 1 2,4,5,6,8,13,15,16 and Dye's own alterations on FW-ravine 18.  But, essentially it was according to original design intent, I thnk.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Brian - did you see where some of the new back tees are for this Open?  If that's the most respectful of design - which I may not disagree with - it just tells me how BAD the other majors are in this context way more than how good the R&A is re TOC.

Tees that are OB... that's a new one on me.

TH,

Since seeing those tees in Golf Digest I can't get the notion out of my mind of - What the happens if, as I'm swinging, a 60 mile per hour gust knocks my ball off its tee and I wiff? Am I allowed to hit the ball off the deck right there hitting two or am I hitting three no matter if I re-tee it or not? Was there some property law/tax/something reason for not simply re-directing the OB stakes around those tees?

Ohhhhh.....the Womens' majors ?

You have the scores and you have the courses.  The courses have lost everytime and will continue to do so.

JESII: I think we can safely assume that the OB lines will be moved for the Open Championship. They're probably shown thatg way in GD for perspective.

I didn't see the article about the OB tees on The Old Course.  Scary indeed.  Which ones?  (Thinking #14 here  :o)

Bill - I think the tees are OB on 2, 13, 14... there were quite a few.

And JES, you are not alone - those exact rules thoughts occurred to me as well!

I'd have to guess Jim S. is correct and the OB lines will be redrawn for the Open.  If not, well then aren't they breaking a rule straight from the start by playing from OB?

Night sweats, you betcha.  This is one of those conundrums/paradoxes that tend to occur in our wacky game...

That new tee at the 14th seemed pretty incredible last fall. With an unfavorable wind, blowing towards OB, you would even have to play more to the left.  This would make the hole play even longer.

The course doesn't seem to have been touched too unfavorably as it relates to the non-professionals.  Bunkers have been tidied up a bit.

Other than 'modernizing/cleaning up' the bunkers and  lengthening tees,   what else has been done at the TOC ?

They will have the course marked properly come July.

I believe the Open Championship is played on courses that are not as fully turned away from their principles as other majors.

Whilst I agree in the sadness shown at Augusta's change from what it was about in the 1930s to what it is now, I am also amongst those that note that in the modern staging of The Masters (my comments not pertaining to year round play), the current course still does an excellent job of hosting this great event in its 21st Century guise.

No major is anymore.  What do courses do to attract majors?  Implement plans for major revisions.  What happens to a course when selected for a major?  More revisions.

Alterations to courses preparing for a major has turned into a boutique business in GCA, no?
