Too Little Bunkers...?
« on: June 14, 2005, 06:27:55 PM »
One of the more oft heard criticisms I've heard directed to architects is using too many bunkers. Either to "frame a shot," or "aim at."

Does anybody feel there are situations where one of the dead guys used too little bunkers? Or Doak, C&C, DeVries, et al.?

Any specific hole where a bunker would make the hole more interesting than what feature is there now?

How about bunker size?, do any of you feel that there are courses where the bunkers are too small? Which ones?

Kyle,

I'm anxious to get back to Marquette, MI to play Mike DeVries' new Greywalls course. I worked with Mike there, early in the construction phase, so I'm pretty familiar with the design concept. There are a number of bunkerless holes at Marquette that I think are going to work well.

Correct me if I'm wrong, 'cause again, I haven't seen the finished course, but I think #1 is basically bunkerless, along with #2, #4, #5, #6, #7, #14, #15, #16, and #18. That's 10 of 18 holes! And, curiously, Mike tells me there are fewer bunkers at his new Mines course near Grand Rapids, MI scheduled to open later this year!

Thing is, there's some great contour at Marquette that negated the need for sand bunkers. The project kinda reminds me of Stanley Thompson's Highlands Links, a comparably rugged site where The Toronto Terror used few bunkers. At Highlands Links, #2, #9, #12, #14, and #16 are bunkerless, but I think #1, #4, #7, #8, #13, and #15 would be good holes without sand hazards as well. That's 11 of 18 bunkerless holes at Highlands Links that would work!

Mike -

My favorite hole at Winged Foot is # 17 on the East Course.  It is the only one of the 36 without a bunker.

200+ from the tips, downhill to a upside down salad bowl green set within a bowl.  If you miss the green, you will likely face a downhill lie lob shot that has to carry a small ravine to a green which seems to slope away from you at every angle.  Thus, hitting the green whilst knowing the penalty for a missed shot doubles the reward.

The real beauty of this hole is the fact that Tillinghast was able to create such a challenge without using his signature/trademark bunkering.
