Bandon Under Tsunami Alert
« on: June 14, 2005, 11:33:11 PM »
Bandon and the rest of the NW coast is on tsunami alert because of a 7.4 earthquake near Eureka CA. It is not known if a tsunami has been generated. My limited knowledge thinks the quake needs to be at least 8.0 to have a chance. Anyways, the courses are too far above sea level to be affected, but the Bandon Harbor is vulnerable.

This was no laughing matter last night - the tsunami warning wasn't just for the NW, but extended from Canada to Mexico - the whole Pacific coast.  Given what we all saw last Christmas, well... I have to tell you when my wife came home talking about this (having heard about it on the radio), my 7 year old son was truly scared.  We had to tell him we were safe behind a pretty big set of hills (Santa Cruz mountains), which we are living in San Jose.  But he was asking all sorts of questions about our friends and relatives not so sheltered....

Let's just say I was damn happy when the news came that the warning was off.

TH -

Yep, evacuation of beaches, etcs. occurred but the funniest thing that I saw was one of the local TV stations had a film crew up on the bluffs overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge interviewing people who were up there to watch the tsunami come in  ... and it was DARK !!!!

Of course, one of the CNN teleprompter readers said that there was not threat of a Tsunami because the earthquake happened out in the ocean away from the shoreline.

Perhaps, if Tsunami would happen, Pasatiempo would go up in its rankings as it might be considered a seaside links course ;)

Oh my god... the CNN person didn't really say that, did he/she?  Good lord how else can a tsunami occur?  Wow...

And the tsunami fans up in the hills sitting in the dark just prove we don't have the market cornered on intelligence out here.  As if anyone needed any proof of that.   ;)

Great point re Pasa, btw.  I must confess I was thinking the same thing this morning, about several courses... oh man....

Even as much as I love P-temp, I wouldn't welcome a tsunami since it would ruin Bob Huntley's home courses and a few others in that area...  eg. I don't think the 16th at CPC would fair too well....
