Great "Lay-up, Chip and Putt for Par" holes
« on: August 09, 2005, 05:00:29 PM »
Aside from #16 at CPC, what other great "Lay-up, Chip and Putt for Par" holes are out there?  What other architects are using this strategy today?

We just saw it last month - The Road Hole.

Or, are you specifically talking about par 3's?

Walter Travis loved to build 250 yard par threes with flanking trouble on the sides of the green. When you look at the green contours, it usually favoured only an approach from straight in, but who is capable of this from 250 out? What he set up was a classic match play (par 3 1/2) hole. You could play short, and have a reasonable chance at par through chipping, or try your luck with a direct approach and be in deep trouble for missing left or right.

The 17th at CC of Scranton was such a hole. Deep right and left bunkers with a complicated green pitching hard towards the tee.

The 9th at Cherry Hill, bunkers left and right, very long hole uphill and into the wind, more managebale now in modern times.

The NLE 6th hole from Orchard Park, 235 yards flanked hard right and left with bunkers.

I'll be the first to say #3 at Pasatiempo. Nasty downhil pitch if you miss left. Deep deep bunkers if you miss right.

How about Calamity at Portrush, and #16 at Carnoustie?

How about number 5 at Pine Valley?  The only miss is short...

Somebody help me here-- was it Jones or Hogan who played the 9th hole at Oakland Hills- the long par 3 into the wind with a 1 iron short of the green and then chipped up and 1 putted 4 days in a row in an Open win.

14th at Dornoch - anything more than a 7-iron to approach with, and it's the best bet.

Sean,

Yes, the 5th at PV!

Faldo has even said that when he played the course (being one of his favourites), he hit a long iron off the tee to lay up short and he proceeded to chip and putt as the thread title suggets.

He then went on to say "that it is the only par 3 in golf he has ever laid up on"

Expert opinions here:

Isn't #17 at Congressional this way?  I've seen guys blow tournaments there every single time I've seen it on TV.  Tom Lehman would probably have an Open or two in his resume if he'd played short and tried to get up and down.  And that's a Tour Pro!  For us normal folks, my guess is that it's just not worth it to go for at least the back half of that green.....thoughts?

I think it was more like that in the past.  This year I saw lots of short irons into the green, and maybe even some wedges?

#7 at my home course of Tedesco in MA....a 240 par 3 with a small green flanked with bunkers.

#8 at Essex County Club...a long par four with a small, crowned, wild green where the green is open in front.  Approach shots should be run onto the green, and if it is any more than a 6-7 iron, a chip and a putt may be the best bet.

#17 at Taconic...par 3 of 210 with a severely sloped green back to front.  A 50 ft chip uphill is better than a 5-ft downhiller.  Much the same can said about the tenth green as well.

#3 and #12 at Myopia...a course where the green surrounds are in play more than any place i've played on this side of the Atlantic...both of these holes are half-par holes...but half a shot over par.

I have two-

One is at Crystal Downs and it is in the discription of how to play the course by Alister Mackenzie. I forget which hole but he talks about laying up on your approach, then pitching and putting for par. Fred has the book. It might be in the course guide on the proshop desk.

The other is 13 at Kingsley. I view it as a drivable par 3 that you are best laying up on, chipping/pitching close and making the putt for 3.

#2 at Dornoch.

Very hard to hit green in wind with any club.  Missing green left is bad, right is bad.  Very possible double in either case.

Layup route is a careful short 9-iron, and a 30yd pitch.

Not defying the card par of these holes, but #13 & #15 at Augusta are I think great examples of this, regardless of what the scorecard says their par is.

In a way, I know it opens a pandora's box when reachable par 5s are included in the discussion. But I guess the best reachable par 5s in the world are often excellent advertisements for the principles of half par holes or holes that play terrifically when some players have to one putt to achieve their standard aims for that hole.
