Dupont CC (Dupont course) renovation photos
« on: June 08, 2005, 10:47:04 AM »
I was sent pictures of 7 holes of the Dupont CC - Dupont
course renovation being carried out by Lester George
(currently also restoring Greenbrier - Old White).  Many of
you know that Dupont CC was host of the LPGA Championship
for the last 11 years before moving to Bulle Rock this year.
The McDonald's was at Dupont for a few years before it
became the LPGA Championship.

A few of you know I was a member at Dupont CC for two
years in the early 90's when I worked for a Dupont joint
venture company, so I'm familiar with the course.

To compare the holes, here's the aerial (AOTD #175), with
holes marked and my guesses as to the locations of new greens and tees.

#3 green (par 4).  This was the only pic I didn't recognize,
because this is a new green, moved to the right, assuming a
bunch of trees were cleared.  My guess as to the location is
the red circle on the aerial.

#4 (par 4):

#10 (par 4), was always the toughest green on the course:

#11 (par 5), with several new fairway bunkers:

#12 (par 4), with 2 new fairway bunkers beyond the bend:

#12 closer up:

#13 (par 3):

#14 (par 4), with a new fairway bunker.  Also missing is the
tree that was behind the right fairway bunker 50 yards short of the green:

#14 green:

#14 green again:

#15 (par 4), with the new green on the other side of the
creek, at least 50 yards to the right of it's former location.
My estimate of it's location is the green circle on the aerial.  I
also estimated the location of the new back tees for the par 5 16th.

 Scott,
The new #15 green is to the right and maybe a little longer than the old one. It is situated so that the creek wraps around the left side and somewhat around the back.

The real benefit of the work will be the reintroduction of contour in the greens. John Gosselin (the super) told me the original Tull greens had significant flow which was removed within the first few years of the course.

Growing up there I always thought the "flattish" grens were the biggest weakness. I am thrilled for the course.

 Scott,

I don't think #3 green was moved, although the pond is gone. They enlarged and softened #10 green.

Possibly John Gosselin will appear and make sense of this.

Mike,

I was told that #3 green was moved to the right toward the creek.  It's likely now located in between the old location and the red circle I added.  How else could a picture taken from front right of the green be able to see #16 fairway in the right background at that angle?

Glad the pond was removed.

I think that is #15 fairway to the right. Over the hump to the left would be #14 green.

This is looking rather intriguing.

I'm excited to get down and see for myself once the work is completed.

I've never played it, but after walking it a number of times in the LPGA, I can see why they went with the renovation route, as opposed to strict restoration.  It was never an architecturally superb course, but there was enough good stuff and reasonably cool landforms to build onto.

Can't be 15 fairway.  There never was that thick of a tree
line left of 15 (can see in aerial).  You can also see beyond
16 fairway the new bunkering put in on #11.

In the picture of #15, look at the tree to the right of the
creek that hasn't fully bloomed with leaves.  That is the tree
in the distance in the left side of the pic of #3 green behind
what looks like a bush.

 Scott,

I'll take your word for it. If it was moved then my historical perspective is useless.

More importantly---when are we going to play it.

Sorry, Dupont is on the outskirts of Wilmington, DE.  Dupont,
the chemical company, is headquartered in Wilmington, along
with what seems like half the banks in the U.S.

Mike C.

Isn't that thinking a pretty slippery slope?  Who makes the determination a bored membership that wants more challenge or an unethical "restoration specialist" that wants work.

Hope to see you soon. :)

Don't know, and don't know if the work is even finished yet.

Hey Corey...great to hear from you!  ;D

Yep, it's a VERY slippery slope.  I just think in this particular case they got it right.

The course that was there was about a Doak 4.5.

I don't recall decimals in the Doak Scale... ;)

The former Louviers course was my preference of the 4
(then) Dupont courses.  As of late 2003, Dupont members still
had access to Deerfield aka Louviers.

TY for the course looked familiar. One of my golf buddies here is a member there and there is a picture of it on the wall.

Scott,

The 3rd green was only "slid" over about 20 feet towards the greek.  I'll send you some other pictures to show 15 and 16 if you want.  Not sure who Corey is or what his problem is.

 Scott,

You are right about #3. I have played it since the work; it is a great improvement. There is more interest off the tee, more intrigue in and around the greens,  more challenge, and good lengthening and use of the property.

Let me know if you are up this way ; I would play it again.
