12th at Wannamoisett

I remember reading somewhere that Ross said (at the time) that it was the best par 3 he designed, possibly the best par 3 in the US. Is this true or did I dream it??
Fantastic hole- which I think is certainly the best on the back side. The green is huge and provides a "backstop" which feeds the ball back to the front-middle pin placement.

What a hole! Last year at the Northeast Am the players were ALL OVER the front middle pin.

One of the greatest bunkers anywhere, plus you can visit the snack shack when you are done.

Here's the hole.  Corner of snack shack at upper left behind tree.  215 yards:

A great one shot hole, and the 3rd is a great one too.  The mixture of long and short par 3's is really creative architecture in my opinion.
How this course could go out of the top 100 is beyond understanding.

For those who have not played the hole the aerial photo above can be misleading.  This hole plays all up hill and is fairly long.  The bunker is in a perfect position to capture a large percentage of poorly struck long irons.  Once you are in the bunker the player is faced with a difficult second shot - especially if you end up in the front section because you will have to hit a very long sand wedge to reach the green.  This is a very difficult shot for most average players to pull off.  Two players in my group decided to play out to the fairway and take their chances from there.  If your ball finds the bunker off the tee ball double-bogie can become a fast reality.

It is a hole - IMHO - that is designed by a man who thought about strategy and also observed how people played his courses.

I agree. Isn't it funny how certain courses photograph. I took a friend of mine to watch the Notheast who had just played Shadow Creek and he said from a visual perspective Wannaomoisett was far superior. I mean far superior. Walk those grounds, it may not come across in Photos, .... pure nirvana.

I agree also with Jonathan's comment about that bunker eating up tons of shots from us mere mortals. The hole is 215 uphill and if you try and lean on a 3 iron too much you will hook it and end up dead, thus you make your normal wing and if you do not hit it on the money you will invariably be in that huge bunker with a semi-blind bunker shot or one that is long enough to make your knees quake. The freeswinging collegiates who play the amatuer bomb god knows what into that hole (5 or 6)- different from you or I.
