1001 Golf Holes You Must Play Before You Die
« on: May 27, 2005, 08:29:39 PM »
Was at BJ's (for those not familair warehouse store lilke Costco, Sam's Club) today.  Surprisingly ame across the aforementioned book.  Jeff Barr is the editor with a preface by Robert Trent Jones  Jr. and forward by Bradley Klein.  Haven't looked at it carefully but actually seems better than 500 great golf Holes or whatever that Golf magazine published.  Nice relatively in depth descriptions of the holes, which are organized by number 1, 2, 3...18.  Also good pictures.  Wish there were more but quality is good.  Not a coffee table book so quite manageable to read and cost was only $25.  But in looking quickly there are some errors.  For example, the third at Wannamoisett has a picture that is not the third at Wanamoisett and in fact is not Wanamoisett.  Overall tho a nice addition to the library.

Another error is listing a Legends Course at Bandon. In addition to an index of holes by course, there is also an index by architects.

I just spotted this book at a store today, and it looked pretty good.  One thing I found odd was that there were 3 holes from Bandon Dunes listed, yet none from Pacific Dunes.

There were several holes featured from courses I've played, and I'd rate many holes from Pacific Dunes higher than most of them.  Does anyone know if the author just hasn't visited Bandon since Doak's course opened?

The book was published in 2005 and there were newer courses than Pacific Dunes featured, so it doesn't appear that it was too new to include.

I received that book as a gift and noticed that it was full of errors as well. The only one that jumps to mind was that Saucon Valley was listed as being in Bethlehem, New Jersey, but I recall several others as well.

I have the book and was wondering why such a large % of the pictures (half?) were of golfers and not golf holes..

Doak rating about a 5...Keep it in the bathroom.
