PSU White Course Photos (Willie Park, Jr.)
« on: May 26, 2005, 03:13:28 PM »
Played the White Course yesterday and took all the photos I am going to need for the second part of my three part series on the PSU Golf Courses. In the name of shameless self-promotion here are some previews:

The Second Hole, while not a Willie Park original (this one was from from the 1970 Harrison and Garbin Blue Course) it's one of the best on the course. Just to the left of the picture is a view of Mt. Nittany and the buildings in the middle left of the picture are the graduate housing that was built on much of the old Willie Park routing.

The Eighth Hole, a Willie Park hole, showing some of the original bunkering from 1922. On the original routing, the bunker in the foreground is in the middle right of the fairway. Today, the mowing has shifted left and the bunker sits a good five yards off the fairway. This picture is from near the landing area of the original hole. The lights in the background are for the Rugby field that sits on the old site of the 1922 18th Hole.

Two shots of the Ninth Green, another Willie Park hole. The first is from the right side of the hole and the second was taken from the Seventh Tee to the left of the green. This dramatic push up style is found all over the course and I've never seen anything quite like it. From the cart path on to the top of the green is roughly 6-7 feet with the back side of the green dropping off even more.  Also notice how the green sits on the pad. It is my belief that the green was originally designed to be the size of the top of the pad.

The Eleventh Green from what was the center of the 11th fairway in the original 1922 routing. Notice the grassed over bunker in the foreground and the mound gaurding the right side, that are no longer in play with the present configuration. I took the picture from the 20 yards to the right of the present fairway in the middle of a stand of pine trees.

Nice pictures.  What type of camera did you use and how many pixels.  I only ask because my pictures suck and your seem so vivid.

Nikon Coolpix 5600 5.1 Megapixels... I had just bought it two hours before I took those pictures. I used the landscape mode for most of the pictures. I'd recommend using a tripod - I didn't in those, but I have a fairly steady hand. Some of the pictures turned out absolutely horrible.
