Majestic Highland Golf

Playing at Gleneagles (Kings) yesterday, I reminded myself to take out the camera on the tee at the 14th Hole - 'The Denty Den', drivable Par 4 at 249 off the Yellows - as it is quite possibly my favourite view and certainly one of my favourite holes in all of Scottish golf. (Those puddles on the fairway are not normally there. We played through a series of torrential rain packets swooping in from over the distant Ochil Hills). Made a birdie too - up and down from a greenside bunker!!

The White River runs dark through the heart of the Town,
Washed the people coal-black from the hole in the ground.

I love this hole too.  I don't remember it being so pristine, nor having such a high bunker-filled mound on the right hand side.  In fact I distinctly (and painfully) remember the perils of coming off your tee shot as being down into the trees and a bog and essentially dead.  Did you photoshop those right bunkers in, or have they been added recently (i.e.last 5 years), or am I just having yet another senior moment?

Yuck.  I haven't been there in twenty years, and the stripe mowing is not what I remember at all.

Tom,

I've never been there, and my first reaction was "why have they succombed to the American look?".

I would think, considering the distance of the hole, it would be a much better look to have some ruggedness associated with those bunkers and surrounding contours. One of the neat things about short holes is the opportunity to utilize visual intimidation.

Rich,
save for a wee bit of sharpening and some judicious cropping the pic is as representative of the weather/bunkering/topography and grass as it's possible to be. I too have been down in Ye Bog on the right on occasion. The bunkers as far as I know are all old, but I'm no expert on the place.

Tom and Joe,
don't be too surprised with the current 'US' style of maintenance. There are Two good reasons for this:

1. The ONLY folks who can normally afford to play here ARE American.
and
2. This years G8 summit, being hosted at Gleneagles, is fast approaching and I'm sure they want to make Geedubbya think he's still at home. (Apparently, he won't stay at the hotel but will remain on board a US Aircraft Carrier in the Firth of Clyde and be ferried in a motorcade to and fro every day. The transport infrastructure in Central Scotland is being forecast to come to a complete standstill... >:(

Martin:

W won't think he's at home.  They don't stripe mow at Cape Arundel in Maine (where we consult), and I doubt they do in Midland, Texas either.

They're obviously doing it for the paying customers.

But I do love that hole.  Still remember the last time I played it ... had a great round going, drove the green downwind with a three-wood (I blocked it but it came down off the hill to the right), and absolutely gagged and missed an 8-foot putt for a two.  That was a long time ago, when I could still play.

The bunkers are as I remember them in 1982, but I didn't give them a close inspection.

My bad, Martin. :'(  Just leafed through the archives and saw an old picture I took in 1978 of the 14th.  Same bunkers there then.

Oh Richard, those moments seem to be happening to us a bit often.
