Australia's finest architects
« on: April 26, 2005, 08:24:44 AM »
Who were Australia's finest architects and some of their key designs?

A lot has been written about MacKenzie's visit, what was the state of golf design when he arrived? Was his influence great, moderate or minor?

I think even today Australian golf revolves around Mackenzie's 1926 visit Tom, with Royal Melbourne at its center.

H.L. 'Cargie' Rymil had a copy of Mackenzie's 'Golf Architecture' full of annotations when he was building Kooyonga in the early twenties. He worked on Royal Adelaide before Mackenzie, who would later fill in many of his bunkers.

J.D.A Scott was an Englishman already in Australia, responsible for Woodlands, Sorrento and Stawell which I think the Aussies also know as Grange.

Sloan Morpeth was a New Zealander who lived most of his life in Victoria. He had been Secretary at Titirangi and had met Mackenzie there in 1927. In 1930-ish he became dual Secretary of Commonwealth GC and the Australian Golf Union. Morpeth did Portsea and the twin courses at Peninsula and redesigned Shirley in Chistchurch, NZ. He also did several holes at Commonwealth which was mostly Charles Lane.

Eric Apperly made revisions at NSW and designed Newcastle. I don't know if he ever worked alongside Mackenzie though.

Sam Berriman was the curator at Huntingdale for many years. He did Huntingdale and lots of solid country Victorian courses like Horsham, Sale, Shepparton, Southern and Lakes Entrace. Berriman's blue collar swagger took lots of projects away from the Mawallok squire Alec Russell after World War II. Russell just couldn't be arsed doing anything until Paraparaumu, but he was still the best of the Aussies.

That's incredible detail.  Are those referenced papers and magazines available anywhere on the net?

After playing Pasatiempo and CP a couple of weeks ago, and poking around the photos displayed in the Pasa clubhouse, and then spending an hour with Geoff Shackleford's book on CP, I felt close to Dr MacKenzie.  Actually, I was very close to his house, almost hit it OB there on #6!

Thanks for the fix, Mark.

Excellent stuff!

There was an ariticle on Rymil in the 6th issue Golf Architecture. His designs looked interesting, the article said there was evidence he had been influenced by Herbert Fowler.

Tom,

I recall the Rymill article you refer to is excellent. I really enjoyed it, and also the early photos of some of Rymill's work.

Another reason to order all issues of GOLF ARCHITECTURE magazine!

Bill,
Sadly they are not. Most of it is on microfiche viewable only from the Victorian State Library or the National Archives. If anyone wants to obtain any of these stories in their entirety I would suggest they can contact Hedley through the historical committee at Yarra Yarra Golf Club in Melbourne. Here's one I do have online though.

Tom,
You may be interested in this. As you know, Mackenzie's partner in Australia, Alex Russell, was loaded. Today, Peter and Jocelyn Mitchell own his estate Mawallok and the William Guilfoyle garden it contains. They have preserved it remarkably well. Joseph Johnson once wrote that Russell "counted his holdings in the tens of thousands of acres". He would have likely owned as far as the eye can see in this picture from his back steps.

Mawallok is at Beaufort, 200km northwest of Melbourne. When he was in Melbourne he stayed at 'Raith', Sandringham, which is the address that appears on his side of the Mackenzie Russell letterhead.

This is Mawallok in 1910.

At that time it would have been under control of Alex's father Phillip, son of Alexander Russell, brother of George Russell - one of the founders of golf in Australia with Alexander Reid. They started playing at 'Ratho' (Tasmania) back in the 1820's. Ratho is Greg Ramsay's course of Barnbougle Dunes fame - the oldest outside Great Britain. Originally there were four Russell brothers who emmigrated to Australia from Elie, Scotland. George, Robert,  Alexander and William. They are all buried at 'Golf Hill' which was George Russell's land near Geelong, Vic - the first golfing ground on the Australian mainland.

This was Mawallok under Alex himself. He added a six hole golf course that had its own greenkeeper and, apparently, putting surfaces the equal of anything in Victoria.

This was the scorecard. I'm sure Tom Paul will enjoy the stymie reference.

This is Mawallok today.
