Simply go to http://www.golfcourse.com/ and search out your home course and when you do you will find an option under course links to indentify the courses within a 25 mile radius of the course you searched.  My home course where I have been a member since birth is Lawrence County Country Club and the 11 courses within 25 miles are listed below.  I have played all but Deer Run which my brother designed or East Fork and Cedar Brooke which are all par 3 courses...I am a pitiful whooer..this exercise is incredibly enlightening.

John,

As I mentioned in the other thread, my present address has 77 courses within 25 miles.

My former address (about 25 miles south and closer to Philly) has 147! courses within 25 miles.

I've played about 80-90% of them.

Definite whore.

JakaB

In defense of myself I don't think my brother has either played or seen Deer Run since it was grassed...he designed it for free after I saw the pitiful job they were doing and generously donated his services.   Of course we charged full price to install the cart paths...

I only have 7 courses within 25 miles and I am happy to report I have played all 7.

Golfcourse doesn't list the pitch and putt course or the par 3 course, of which I've played both.  That makes it 9/9.

They are building a new 9 hole course that should be ready this summer for me to try.

I've played 50% (12 of 24) of my "local" courses, that's more like 12 of the 18 that I'd have any interest in seeing.

Camden Country Club
Camden, SC
Ross course, would love to play it

Charwood Country Club
West Columbia, SC
The course where I learned to play, probably 600-800 rounds there

Coldstream Country Club
Irmo, SC
Played there twice, doubt I'll play it again

Columbia Country Club
Blythewood, SC
My favorite course on this list

Fairfield Country Club
Winnsboro, SC
Never heard of it

Forest Lake Club
Columbia, SC
Never played, it would be nice to play but no big deal

Fort Jackson Golf Club
Fort Jackson, SC
Never played, probably play there one day

Golden Hills Golf & Country Club
Lexington, SC
Never played it

The Golf Club of South Carolina at Crickentree
Blythewood, SC
Great layout, questionable conditioning, played 20-30 rounds over the years including yesterday

Green Hills Golf Course
Lugoff, SC
Never heard of it, out in the sticks somewhere

Hickory Ridge Golf Club
Columbia, SC
Ancient "executive" style course, great practice facilities

Indian River Golf Club
West Columbia, SC
Played there 10-20 times, great greens

LinRick Golf Course
Columbia, SC
Played there a dozen times, only municipal course in the area

Northwoods Golf Course
Columbia, SC
A genuine Dye, (P.B. that is), not as interesting to play as it looks at first sight, probably 20+ rounds there

Oak Hills Golf & Country Club
Columbia, SC
Good rolling property, decent course, played it a couple times

River Side Golf Center
Columbia, SC
Nine-hole Par 3 course and driving range, never been there, built on flood plain

Sedgewood Country Club
Hopkins, SC
Played once, it was a ripoff at $25, aka Sedgeweed they mow the fairways about twice a month (seriously)

Spring Valley Country Club
Columbia, SC
Would love to play there, tricky and fast greens, somewhat tight layout

Timberlake Golf Course
Chapin, SC
Beautiful, played there 10-20 times, at least 25 miles from my house

University Club
Blythewood, SC
My home course, some interesting hole, spectacular conditioning, friendly, affordable dues

WildeWood Country Club
Columbia, SC
Never played there, OK course, wouldn't go out of my way

Windermere Club, The
Blythewood, SC
Never played there, OK course, wouldn't go out of my way, brutally hilly

Woodcreek Farms Country Club
Elgin, SC
The only Fazio in town, I've got to get there one day soon

Woodlands Country Club, The
Columbia, SC
Residential course, looks OK, nothing special

I'm curious why a person wouldn't play a course so close to home...the three I have not played don't have carts which is reason enough for me.  So Mike, why havn't you played a course you drive by on the way to work when you have played 700 others...there has to be a good reason.

Mike_Cirba

John,

There are actually two private clubs I drive by on my way to work that I haven't played.  I've been in my new house for 10 months and free time has been pretty limited.

If I received an invite to either one I'd be there as soon as I could arrange it, but there are only so many days in a week.

I've played all of the public courses simply because access is easier.  I can just show up at 3pm on a summer afternoon, pay my fee, and get in line.

Brent Hutto

There are several courses in our area that will not allow walking, at least on the weekends when I play. So it's the opposite of John's problem.

As for crappy pasture courses, our area is overbuilt (relative to its population) with middle-of-the-road private courses as well as cheap semi-private ones. I don't have time to spend checking out yet another open field with golf holes upon it, surrounded by scrub and hardpan. I'd rather spend that day playing golf at a decent course.

There are 106 courses within the U of M course.  Never mind playing those.  I have only managed to play 7 of the 13 in Ann Arbor!

...this exercise is incredibly enlightening.

It is obviously 25 miles as the crow flies ... what is enlightning for us Bay Area folk is that a course 25 miles away takes more than 1 hour to get to ...

A mere 67 courses within 25 miles of my home, and though I've played many, I haven't either of our best-known courses: Castle Pines or Cherry Hills. I'm taking my daughter to the Women's US Open this summer at Cherry Hills, and I'm looking forward to walking it. There is one alleged Donald Ross course on the list - Wellshire Golf Club, which is now a City of Denver Municipal layout. Does anyone know if Mr. Ross ever actually set foot on the property?

One massive difference between golf courses in the North, Rocky Mountains and those in the South and West: no snow.

I'd really be hacked if I were surrounded by courses that could only be played eight months a year - instead of twleve.

Sheeeyeeesh. :-\

johnk

41 out of 51 for me.

Most of the nine-holers and crappy stuff was back before I had kids, and would play any course, any time...

If it was limited to what I've played in the past 4 years, it'd probably be around 10 out of 51...

Odd fact: 17 of the 51 course start with the letter "S"!

Plus who knew there were two "Villages Courses" near me?  I wonder if I can get Nancy Lopez' autograph...   Huckaby?  Benham?  Any idea what this is:

Hey,

I used to play Foss Park in North Chicago at least once a week with my boss...during working hours of course.  It is a real course where keeping it real is the norm..

Wow - you gotta check out that map on the satellite.  This facility has to win the "Most Turtle-like layout from 20,000 feet".
It really is shaped like a turtle.  I can't wait til I fly over it next time...

Shivas,

What was the course affiliated with the Great Lakes Naval Base....did it ever get renovated and did you play it when it still was part of the base.  I never did.

JakaB

I had no idea that was where the Glen Club is....if I hadn't moved from my palatial estate in beautiful Waukegan I would been there all the time.   What a great addition to the public golf scene.   How close is the Glen Club to the lake..

JakaB

I know where Shoreacres is now...but I lived in Lake County for ten years and had never heard of it until I moved down here.  I think they like it that way....I've been to Shoreacres since and it is not the military course I am thinking of...all I can remember is that is was along the Lake.  It has been a long time ago for me...but then again when I had to get rid of my Bulls season tickets they were still in The Stadium and hadn't won a championship.   I wonder how Foss Park has changed in the last 20 years...

DMoriarty

97 w/in 25 miles of my actual home, of those I have played around 20.   In the past three years I have played 5 or less.

> On a normal day, you can hear the ROTCs marching from Great Lakes still....

Whenever I play Shoreacres, I like to hear this sound, as it is a sound that brings back great memories...

You see, I was born up there at Great Lakes Naval Hospital, not far away, and have always felt an attachment to Shoreacres for this reason.

It must be in the blood....
