From the land of Ulster, from just nearby the great links of Royal Portrush, in the town of Coleraine and in the Parish of Ballyrashane, came the Norris family to Canada and then the United States on the Empress of Ireland.

The first news they received from home was that the Titanic had sunk - they originally had planned to travel to North America on the Titanic.

From this glorious history and, hopefully, some day the Club Champion at the Beverly Country Club, we welcome:



LIAM PAUL RICHARDS


to the tee!


born today at 3:43 pm, at 8 pounds, 1 ounce, and 21 inches of future golf course architect!

His caddies were Carol and Paul and big sister Emma was the forecaddie!

Paul, I am thrilled for you and your family. I hope Liam enjoys nothing but the best of health and a happy full life and you have all the joys of parenthood raising him. I am being told by a certain unnamed friend that to see you now means coming to chicago for your traveling days are over. lol John

My two kids are an older girl and a younger boy also... it has worked out quite well.  Oh they do fight, but when things are right the girl is quite maternal toward the boy.  The boy is just a boy.  You'll see.....

In any case welcome to the fold for a future Golf DIGEST rater.  Of course you will want him to be a man of the people, right?

Great news!  Congratulations to you and your wife.  Hopefully you live close to Beverly so that young Liam can spend his summers at the club with his buddies.  That could be your next project- to establish a great junior program at Beverly under the tutelage of someone who has the knowldege, love, and patience to develop young boys and girls into responsible, courteous, and well behaved golfers.

Congratulations. Liam means "guardian" (I think), so I presume you are raising to protect the integrity of classic golf architecture.

Also,

Kudos for exercising restraint in not naming the boy Beverly.  Beverly Briley was a legendary Nashville mayor, but I have no doubt he was a playground whipping boy as a young lad.

Til now, the Prince of Portrush has been the lovely Sean O'Malley, the pride of the Arizona Golf Association, whom I saw make his first hole in one on number 11 at Royal Portrush in 2001.  I know Sean will be only too happy to cede his title to young Liam.  Congrats to Paul and Carol, and congrats and commiserations to young Emma, formerly an only child.
