Wild Horse (some new pics)
« on: April 12, 2005, 04:34:58 PM »
Some of you may remember my WH pics from last year where the front nine had the prairie grass (wooga) burned down. I played on Saturday and the back nine was "burnt" this time. Here are some pics, lord knows how much I love the place.

From the first tee, looking past the 18th green with the 16 green in the distance

This from about 130 yards out on the par-5 third. The tumbleweed in the bunkers, just adds to the difficulty.  ;D

My brother drove it just right of this bunker at the fifth. This is a really neat approach shot.

This is the massive blowout on the 8th from the 7th tee with the clubhouse in the distance. You can faintly see the flag on the ninth to the right.

I love this little picture of the 12th. It's a cool downhill par-4 from 400 to 445 yards.

I finally remembered to get a shot of the narrow green at 15. You must hit your tee shot to the left to have a decent chance at this hole. It's all of 320 yards. We need more holes like this!!

Have a great day!!

I love the green at 15. You're absolutely right about golf needing more like it. Thanks for the photo.

Tony,

Thanks for the pictures.

I'm looking forward to playing there this summer.

How does one handle tumbleweed in a bunker where their ball also happens to reside ?

Wild Horse looks like an incredible place.  Does it play has firm and fast as it looks in the pictures?  It bears a similar resemblence to Sand Hills, except on a smaller scale.  I always love seeing pictures on GCA, always look forward to it.  Great Pics!!!!

Jonathan,
Wild Horse is the epitome of fast and firm.  The maintenance meld there is second to none (including Sand Hills).

Cheers,

I absolutely love Wild Horse, and haven't even played it.  From the pictures I've seen, and now, to hear it plays firm and fast, how much better can a round of golf get.  I bet the wind doesn't to much there though. ;) ;D

Great pics.

The place looks stunning.  That shot of the 15th green!  The lines are so natural; it looks like it was just cut to green height.

Patrick - I wonder about the tumble weed. I was in a few bunkers and thankfully the tumble weed didn't effect my swing. But, you obviously can't remove it so who knows.

FYI - The place was, as always, firm and fast and we played in a light north wind (opposite of normal) so the course was a bitter different from other times I had played there.

They have added back tees at #1 (just over 400 yards), #9 (now 182) and #17 (now about 530). They have also pushed some sand around for a new tee at #14 to extend it to about 560. My guess is these will all be in play for the Nebraska Match Play this summer.

Tony, I see two balls on the green on 15.  Are they both on in reg, or are you like Swanson, and put it there off your drive? ;) ;D

The front bunker n the picture on 15  doesn't quite give one the idea of its' depth.

For those wondering about the burn areas (which they do 1/2 the course spring and the other fall) it will look fine in about 3-4 weeks.  I personally love it when the new grasses are just establishing after the spring burn, and the old native is still lying down a bit from winter dormancy.  That exacts the proper penalty, IMHO.  I'll be there May 1-3.

RJ - Unfortunately, neither ball is mine. I was just off the back but made par. It's amazing how far left you have to be on that hole to have a decent look at the pin. It's my favorite hole out there, no question.

Tony,

Did they finally burn off the rough around 12, 13 and 14?  I know some years the burn off has missed the rough on those holes and seems as natural as the first day it opened.  With regards to the new tee boxes and length, I would bet money it was done to change the holes playability and not to inch closer to the 7k mark.

Dick and I played 9 from the 182 spot last fall, entirely different hole.  I Can’t wait to get back to the unranked Wild Horse.

I guess I can't let the pictures go by without commenting on the two photos that show houses in the backdrop.  The photo of the second shot to 5 is indeed quite acurate of the influence the roofline has.  The hole with its convex or inverted bunker is a gem.  The roofline when playing from the right side of the fairway is not immediately behind the skyline of the green-bunker complex.  But, as you see, from the left side near the bunker, it is now involved in a detraction from the skyline of the inverted bunker which give the hole its charm with the vagueness of how much there is to work with behind the bunker.  That is too bad, but an inevitable problem as the home lots get sold and more houses are built.  That house behind 5 is atleast 150 yards from the green.

The photo of 12 is a bit of an illusion due to the zoom on the camera.  That house doesn't detract from that particular approach, and is probably 600+ yards behind the green there, with 14 green and 15 fairway still in the background.

It is no secret how much I love WH.  While the course won't play any different (if no one tampers with the course routing and bunkering scheme) it will hold its playing qualities except that skylines of greens and bunker complexes as seen on the example of 5th hole will be a detraction.  So, I guess it is fair to say that this detraction will mitigate against its high place of esteem in many folks minds.  That is a pity, but a reality, IMHO.
