TonyC:

He played a practice round with Lashley on Saturday and Lashley was in the group just ahead today. I didn't realize it was Lashley that had that terrible family tragedy.

John Hurley had a disasterous day at Merion. However, I have done my level best to start all kinds of stories about his driving distance (all completely true btw) all over both clubs and on the Internet and with on-going personal contacts in the last two days. It seems to be working like a gypsy charm too. As young Hurley went along hitting driver on #5, #6, #14 the spotters asked who the hell that was? At the 503 yard #5 into a slight head wind Hurley had 180 in but when I got around to #15 some friend of mine said he heard he had 130 yards into #5!  ;)

I'm simply fascinated in the dynamics of rumors!!  ;) :)

And here is the swing speed of another frequent subject of GCA threads:  Michelle Wie at 108 mph.  Supposedly translates to a ball speed of around 160 mph.  She is working hard on her strength so she can hit more easily out of rough.

Since Nebraska's young John Hurley had a disasterous round at Merion yesterday (four lost balls on the last four holes) he won't be around on Wednesday for match play.

So, if anyone wants to see some serious distance, serious swing speed and ball speed (clocked by the USGA on Saturday at 193mph) today is your last chance. He tees off at PCC's #10 at 9:42.

Since he has nothing to lose I'd expect to see him really go after PCC----my recommendation to him would be to use driver up to fourteen times! :)

He does have the ablility to go low (he set the Wild Horse G.C. course record of 64 in the Nebraska Match Play Championship in June).

Probably the most interesting strategic question for him today is whether he drives the 1st green with a drawn 3 wood or a high cut driver? If he drives #1 with a 3 wood draw, I'd say the chances will increase that he may reach #2 with one of his better driver power fades!   ;)
