Help a golf starved Canuck
« on: March 18, 2005, 04:36:32 PM »
I'm getting desperate to tee it up and am considering getting in the car and heading south from Toronto next weekend.

How far down do I have to go to find courses open for play and providing decent playing conditions?

Matt,
Get your butt back to Scotland, mate. EVERYWHERE is open - why, we've even put the Astroturf mats away!!!

Martin, you know I'd love to, and most certainly will sometime.  However, at this point I'd settle for a winterkilled muni in rural Pennsylvania.

Matt,

A couple Windsor guys I know headed down to Kentucky today, for weekend golf. I don't know exactly where, or if weather and conditions will be good though?

Matt,
I recently drove back from Fla and the snow line began in northern Va. I'd say if you wanted reasonably good conditions with mid 60 temps you'll have to get to northern NC, at least.

Matt:

I hear you loud and clear.

This fellow toronto resident  is heading out next week for a second west coast swing of the 2004-2005 winter season - la / sf /  bandon

It is only a month or so until the white turns into green - no need to talk you off the ledge - its not that bad(lol)

The Carolinas option makes perfect sense -  under 2 hours by plane - way too easy. You can also drive it in a day as another option

The artificial turf at The Launch is almost all green, there was good roll, and it was toasty with the heaters on.  A little weak on the architecture, and the green complexes ;D, but it is Toronto in March.

Of course, I can say this since I was in Los Cabos last week.  I think I can hold on for another 3 weeks or so.

Hope on a plane for England.  We have just broken the back of "winter".  Played yesterday in short sleves.  The course is completely dry.  I will take you down to Pennard, Andy levett can join us.  I will point out the superiority of Pennard to the pretender up north.

Ciao

Gentlemen, thank you for your assistance...I'm going to play it by ear and watch the weather.  My fiancee has decided she'd like to come along so I think we'll be looking to base ourselves from a city of somewhat significant size, allowing her to stay busy while I tee it up.

Come mid-week, I'll be checking the weather in Boston (Cape Cod), Philadelphia, New York (Bethpage may open this week), and Richmond.  I'd love to hit the Pinehurst area but I think it passes the tipping point for drive time...I've only got three days.  I suppose Richmond is the best bet weather-wise, it sounds as though Philly is not too bad either, although I haven't heard much of anything about public golf in that area.

Matt,
I drove from Pinehurst to Toronto three years ago and made two stops for gas. It was not a bad drive and I did it by myself in one day.

If I was you, I would drive to Tobacco Road, get in the car and drive home.

Thanks for the advice, Ben.  Are you suggesting Tobacco Road is really the only thing worth the time and effort?

No, I think Pinehurst No. 2 is worth a look as well... Ha!

I am saying that Tobacco Road is worth a trip alone, as is No. 2, play them both and you are set.

Matt,

Play Tobacco Road and Southern Pines (economy), and arrange for a walking tour of the No. 2 course (economy)!

If your girl's with you, the village of Pinehurst provides for a very enjoyable evening or two... drinks, dinner, etc.

Matt,
If you go to Philly, scotland run, pine hill, and glen mills are 3 good public courses about 30 min. from downtown that would cost about $60 US this time of year.  IM me if you want, and i can give you more info.

Matt,

If you are coming to Philly, I'll play Talamore with you (it'll be a freebie). Not an architecturally sound course, but its golf.
