Changes over time, and not initial design, are what have made most "great" courses great.

I'd like to play them all (some again, some for the first time) but I'd rather play:

--Pebble Beach than Cypress Point
--Augusta than Pine Valley
--Pacific Dunes than Sand Hills
--The Old Course than Kingsbarns
--Portsalon than Ballybunion
--etc.

Technically (in a GCA sense), and in general, golf courses today are much better than golf courses designed and built in the golden age

There is a big difference between being contrary and being critical

I can spell, but I'm lzaqy

I Like..

-greens at rediculous speeds w/ elephants buried in them.

-taking a cart w/ a good friend next to me.

-not having a beer when I'm done.

-the train wreck threads

-playing the up tees

-beverage cart girls

-Pelican Hill

-graphite shafted irons

-someone else to clean my clubs for a change

-new courses (though not as much as before)

-Barney

-knowing that someplace, somewhere there is a piece of property that lies virgin in the ground then when found, will put all others to shame.

Heah, I'm the eternal optimist!

So what courses or archtiectural features do you like that are not universally praised on this board.............

brother Pete Buczkowski

my list of course requirement MUST haves are
1) more walkers play than riders
2) allow metal spikes
3) every one in the group knows where ALL the balls played are
4) tolerant of high handicappers

most if not ALL of the courses discussed here wouldn't make it past no 1 and 2 above - and while walking is "praised" here i doubt many actually do

Pine Valley should not be touched

Ian, my friend

You don't even want the trees out that are growing in the bunkers on the left side of #12?

Shame on you. :D

And don't forget to ban Fazio from ever setting foot on the property again.

.....Thanks, man, I couldn't pass up that big fat lob....

brother frank_D,

Could you please give some examples of these courses that meet your criteria but are disliked by GCA as a group?  I am especially intrigued by #3 - does this exclude public courses.  ;)

brother frank_D,
........courses that meet your criteria but are disliked by GCA as a group?

brother Pete Buczkowski

yes - but first some ground rules because mentioning the entire group would be swayed like a herd of sheep is not going to happen - i will concede that up front (also "disliked" seems strong but lets see - i would use "not on their top xx list" since that seems more appropriate here with a fixation on lists and courses that make them)

if one condones CART paths the preference to walk has been overruled (COURSE FEATURE) - if one denies metal spikes the marketing has overruled common sense (KARMA) - if the players aren't tuned into the other players in the group it will take longer than necessary to complete a hole (PACE OF PLAY) - tolerance of high handicappers (COMMERADERIE)

[geography and weather should be be taken into account]

so i'll start with three (ALL public (one muni)) to begin with
1) club de golf de l'ille de montreal (montreal canada)
2) casperkill cc (poughkeepsie NY)
3) sprain lake (yonkers NY)

i do have more but lets see how these examples go

A little late, and I'm sure no one will look at this thread now, but....

I don't like beverage carts, but I love hot cart girls.

I like beautiful women in general, especially brunettes.

Beautiful women who golf turn me on.

Beautiful women who are very skilled at golf are the most desirable women around.

And if they're brunettes.....

I like some trees, to a point.

I prefer large, old, stately deciduous trees, nowhere near the fairway line, and off the rough line, too.

I like Stonehouse and Tot Hill Farm by Mike Strantz.

I like Barona Creek as much as Rustic Canyon.

I have a Perfect Club, but it is far from Perfect for me, because it's too offset.

I saw pictures of the top of my swing from my recent vacation, and it was not a pretty sight.  Changed it last weekend, and immediately improved.  Maybe I can hit that Perfect Club now.

I have played several Fazio courses that I like.

I like my large-headed driver, but it's come at the expense of my 3-wood, which I can't hit any more.

My opinions on caddies are shared by several of the people above.  Sorry, Adam, but they're too expensive and too disruptive to flow, especially double-bagging.  They should be young kids who aren't trying to make a living off of it, as it's a great way to introduce a kid to the game.  I wish there had been caddies anywhere near where I grew up, so I could have been one.

I also don't know who Barbara Boxer is.

I know who Christy Canyon is.  Marvelous actress.

Some of Rees' older designs, pre-Pieces, are pretty decent.

I don't know if I like single malts, I've never had one.  Haven't had a shot of whisky in 10-15 years (closer to college).

I've never been across the pond.  My plan - and hope - is for a 40th b-day present.  I'm just about 2 1/2 years away.

Club pros have a strike against them in my book, because they are mostly cartballers.  Just because a cart is free, doesn't mean you have to take it.  Same with those Tour-like lockers you call golf bags with your name on them.  The few that go against the grain and walk and carry are special guys.  I've been lucky to meet a few within the past year or so.

I only drink alcohol while playing scrambles, and then only on the back nine.  Gave up playing scrambles a few years ago.  Well, I might have had a beer on the course with a GCAer or two.

Rounds with GCAers take longer than most normal rec rounds, because we're talking non-stop and looking at course features.  But we'd never lag behind.  We know better.  They seem to go by much faster, though.

I'll admit that:

As much as I like Talking Stick-North and play it every time I'm in Scottsdale, I disliked Kapalua Plantation and rode off after 9...

SFGC and Bethpage Red are very similar courses except for the ambiance

I never met a Ted Robinson course I've liked although there was one where the front nine was OK (Tijeras Creek)

Billy Bell is very underrated as an architect, just play some of the munis he designed in Orange County

Billy Bell Jr was pretty good also

Every architect has at least one good course in them

I really like Pete Dye courses but like Tillie even more

Bayonet/Black Horse might be the most underrated 36 hole complex in the US

Pete Galea might be the most underrated superintendant in the US (and nicest guy)

Give me a golf course that isn't walkable and I'll show you a golf course I won't play (unless the temperature is over 90 and the course is empty)

I get no greater pleasure in life than taking $20 from Huckaby at the end of the King's Putter ;D

Barney should grow up and learn some new words

I like Pasa much more than Spyglass

Poppy Hills is a pretty darn good golf course

The best part about GCA is meeting the participants (with a few exceptions, of course)

I like Spanish Bay a lot

I'd rather play Pasa 3 times than Pebble once but would take another round at Cypress over just about anything

Bethpage Black is still my favorite golf course in the world although Cypress is at virtually the same level

I liked Barbara Boxer but would vote for Rudy Giuliani for anything

The Sopranos is the best TV of all time (and better than most movies as well)

The 1996-2000 Yankees might have been the best sports team of all time

I generally don't like Fazio courses yet I am a member at one.
I haven't liked Kapalua Plantation, no matter how much I have tried.
I thoroughly enjoyed Old Head, and would absolutely love to play it again.
I thought Waterville was overrated.
I liked the towns of North Berwick and Kinsale more than St Andrews.
I don't like playing from an assigned set of tees while in Scotland.
I thought Pine Valley was the single greatest place I have been on earth, but I thought it would be more difficult.
I disliked the Ocean Course at Kiawah (in a 35 mile an hour wind).
The more exclusive a golf course/club, the more I want to play it.
I would play with a caddie every round if I could afford it.

I like most Fazio and Nicklaus courses I have played and would recommend them to others.

I quit the USGA last year.

  I don't mind carts.

I haven't posted any scores in 2 1/2 years. Heck I haven't kept score in over a year.

I love the feeling of being on the first tee of a course I've never played before.

I almost cried walking up the 18th hole at Cypress Point knowing that it was almost over.

I love Golf Club Atlas! Thank God for Ran.

I love 9 hole golf courses.

I love my King Kong Cobra driver and laddie golf balls.

I believe a putter only has so many putts in them and then they are no good.

I let my subscriptions to Golf Digest, Golf Tips and Golf World expire this past year.

I love it when the course ratings come out.

I hate practicing. I wanna play!!

My playing buddies could care less about golf architecture.

  I hate slow play.

I never take a practice swing.

Golf is the greatest game ever.

   We are truly blessed.
