European experience
« on: March 01, 2005, 06:26:38 AM »
A number of N. American architects made British tours prior to an architectural career or a major project: Macdonald, Ross, Tillinghast, Macomber, Travis, Emmet, Wilson, Crump, Leeds, Thompson and a few others...what affect did it have on their architecture, if any?

Who didn't travel overseas and of those who didn't, is their architecture missing anything or different in any way?

Did Raynor ever make a trip over to the UK?

Flynn never travelled to the UK.  His daughter's best recollection that the only place he travelled overseas to was Cuba.

Flynn was a close companion of a number of folks that went to the UK, most notably Hugh Wilson.

That's interesting, Wayne. I'm kinda surprised Flynn never made a point to travel to the UK.

Stanley Thompson visited the heathland courses with his brother while they in England with the Canadian armed forces during WWI. I know he made a point to visit Willie Park's Huntercombe and Sunningdale courses.

Not sure if Thompson ever made it up to Scotland though?
