Also congrats to Baxter Spann and Black Mesa at #50.

Sure a lot of  Pete Dye in the top 20.   Top 10 Modern looks like a GCA favorites list.

TucoBlog,

Did the new Stranz course at MPCC qualify for modern or classic? Did it not make the cut or not enough people have seen it?

Is the new TucoBlog focused on clubs you play golf on or clubs you play golf with?

In all sincerity, and in no way trying to be inflammatory, how in the world could Cuscowilla rate so high?  In front of Spyglass? Kingsley Club? The Ocean Course?  I really enjoyed the course, but I simply can't buy its lofty ranking.

Brad,
I am with you 100% on that, there are others it should not be ahead of either , but your samplings are quite adequate to ask the question.

Harbour Town behind Dallas National :-[

But I am glad to see that the Preserve has moved up and got away from some of it's earlier critisism

Those lists sure do illustrate a geographic trend in architecture. By my count, 11 of the top 100 on the classics list are in New England. There isn't a single New England course on the 100 best modern list.

Michael W-P,

Have you played Dallas National?  I've played both a number of times and I think that DN is a much better course.  In fact, I like Long Cove much better than Harbour Town.  Different horses for different courses.

Nice wussy rankings.

Are you guys EVER gonna man up and compare the old to the new?

There's not doubt we're going to have to get more Golfweek raters out to The Ocean Course...  The course is substantially better and the conditions greatly improved since your 2002 Rater's Cup was held here at Kiawah.  Pete's 2003 changes have been very well received and the Paspalum greens are as pure as they come.  Come on down and the changes will speak for themselves.  Also, watch the PGA Club Pro Championship on the Golf Channel this summer to get a good look...

Jimmy Murrat- Black Mesa debuting at #50 didn't make your list?

There is at least one course that is not on the Modern list that clearly belongs there. It may be a function of the number of votes needed for a qualified entry. The Rawls Course.

I have played Dn I think it is 5 times, and whilst it is okay, I think it is just that.
Fazio did a good job with the routing, and the par 3's are wonderful, but the par 5's are very ordinary, with an excess of bunkers being the holes only protection.
A very weak finishing hole as well..some very well planned par fours, but in my opinion about a 5.5-6.0 on the so called Doak scale.
I would give Harbour Town a 6.5

Hey Shivas, no they don't, because the points were done based on comparison to only the wussy categories you use (ie Sand Hills is a 9.2 or whatever when related to other modern courses, but might not get that figure if it were done in a manly list of all courses).  Your exalted ruler Mr. Klein came on here himself and said just this the last time this was bantered about.

But nice try.

Your rankings remain interesting, but wussier than Carson on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

Michael,

Funny, because my least favorite holes are the par 3s, specially #3.  I like the par 5s very much though I would guard the second shots a bit more with bunkers.  I think that 18 is a wonderful hole, a true three shoter for most of us into or quartering the perevailing wind and a green that requires good positioning of the second shot.

To me Harbour Town is just a dog-legged bowling alley with small greens.  It seems that on a number of holes you only have one side of the fairway to hit to, otherwise you have to bend the approach shot.  In my opinion, the greens and surrounds at Harbour Town are not very imaginative.  Because they are so small and irregularly shaped, one needs a good chipping game.  But unless you get in the wiry bermuda, chipping is not that big of a deal.  Talk about a site that is flat in most places.  And the bunkers are nothing to brag about.  I do like the finishing holes there.

To each his own, I guess.  As TE Paul says, golf is a big tent.

Kudos to Brad for having Northland on the classic list. I think it's too low in comparison with the other MN courses on that list, but that's a small nit.

Also a question for Brad: Did Windsong Farm get any consideration for the modern list or did not enough people see it?

There you have it, why we all sit around and discuss the ups and downs of ratings.
That is certainly what makes this such a great game, we all see courses differently, and as such will view ratings totally differently.

Shivas,

Barona and RC are comparable in my book.

Black Sheep is better.  There is a lot of golf there, and it is unlike any of the other top courses in Chicago.

You're not supposed to be comparing the classics to the moderns.  But if having a choice of only playing one, Skokie or Black Sheep, baaahh!

Disappointing that Tobacco Road is not on the list, nor any of Mike Strantz work.  But I suppose it's good news for us locals as it should prevent the rates from getting the "Top 100" tax added.
