Hualalai vs. Mauna Kea
« on: February 15, 2005, 11:36:37 AM »
I am playing the Weiskopf Course at Hualalai and Mauna Kea in late March / early April.  Any thoughts on the courses, things to look for?   I know they were built nearly 40 years apart, but how do the courses compare to one another?

I just played the new Wieskopf course at Hualalai 9 days ago, so I can now compare the two.

While W.a.H. has not one but two Weiskopf-standard excellent drivable par 4's (one for each wind direction), overall I'd say they're comparable.  Weiskopf has the edge in par 4's, MK in par 3's, and they're comparable in par 5's.

MK's lava has long since grassed over, unlike WaH, which is black everywhere, giving each a different feel.  Both courses have width, but not in all places.  The wind can lead you astray on occasion.

From what I've heard, Weiskopf is the better of the two at Hualalai.

Make sure and look at some old episodes of Big Three Golf(golf channel runs them from time to time)to see what Mauna Kea looked like when it was new.Have not played the Weiskof course, but the Nicklaus course is a lot of fun and only place in Hawaii that let me walk.

Why do people assume pictures are forthcoming?   ;D ;)

Actually, I only got pics of one hole at Hualalai because of who I was playing with.  I didn't feel comfortable taking a bunch of pics.  I have pics of the other 4 courses I played, although I lost about 10 shots due to a malfunctioning camera.  In due time....

I still have pics of 3 courses I played last fall to post before these....

Mike,

Walking is allowed at both courses at Hualalai.  There will be a caddie program there at some point in the future (the Weiskopf course is for members only, unlike the resort-open Nicklaus course).  I got to walk at 3 courses during my trip due to my "caddie" (o/w known as my wife) driving the cart.   :)
