I am going to Pinehurst to play golf with friends in May.   They have suggested that we play this Legacy course near Pinehurst.  They say it is a pretty good daily fee course.
We are going to play all the Pinehurst course and the National, which I am looking forward to playing.   I have just never heard of the Legacy course, but they seem pretty determined that we should play there.   Anyone have any thoughts on this course?

Legacy is an enjoyable course, but I'm not sure I'd call it one of the best in the area. I believe it was Jack Jr's first course.  It's south of Pinehurst, maybe 10 minutes.

The Par3s are all very similar (water near the green), but there are some interesting holes on the back nine.

I've heard various things about the conditioning over the last few years, but I haven't been down there since around 2001.

I played the front nine there in February, 2004. It's a "nice course" if by that you mean in good condition and with some pretty vistas. It is not a course that would be of interest from an architectural or strategic viewpoint, IMHO. Also, you won't be walking there. Even if you convince them to let you do so (not guaranteed) it is really spread out between hole. In fact, the walks between holes are on beautiful terrain for a golf course but instead they built the course around an artificial lake apparently using muck dredged up from the lake site to create a course that play soft and sloppy.

I left after nine holes because it was a complete and bitter disappointment after 36 at Pine Needles the day before and because the front nine took just under three hours. There was some sort of shotgun-start bunny hop event that morning (of which we were not made aware when we reserved a tee time) and we were the first group off behind the slowpokes. A round there costs approximately as much as a round at Pine Needles or Mid-Pines and I was very disappointed that my trip-mates had overruled me and chosen Legacy. My friends continued for the back nine and I understand the pace picked up and they finished in a little over five hours.

Im my opinion there are to many courses in Pinehurst that are a much better test of golf.  I would prefer to play at the Resort, Pine Needles, Mid Pines, Southern Pines CC, CCNC (if you can get on).  These are just a few. I played at the Legacy in College and its not bad but it is not nearly as good as some of the other courses in the area.

Mike Strantz's Tobacco Road which is a blast is just about 30 to 40 minutes north and definitely worth the trip

Choices that are better include: Mid Pines, Southern Pines, Tobacco Road, you get me drift.

Cripes, I would play each of these courses twice before slopping down my $200 to play #8, that's for sure.

What's the opinion here on Arnold Palmer's course which was recently bought up by Talamore and turned into their "Member's Course?"  This was previously called the Mid-South Club, and before that, The Plantation.  In addition to Mid-Pines, Pine Needles, and Tobacco Road, this was one of the funnest courses I played while in town last February.

Haven't played any on the Resort yet.

If you have not experienced a Mike Stranz course you should definitely include Tobacco Road in your schedule. It may seemed a little tricked up in places but it is truly a unique design! The course is best appreciated the 2nd time around.

The two courses owned by Bob Levy, Talamore and Mid-South are also enjoyable. I only played Legacy once and also experienced a marathon round. After 4 1/2 hours and 15 holes we retired to the clubhouse when we saw 5 groups on #16.

Depending on time you may also want to consider Davis Love's Anderson Creek. This is a good test and a lot of fun! It is about 30 to 40 minutes from Pinehurst.

Play the Legacy once.. preferrably as a warm-up course if you're going to be there for any length of time.. you can hit away on most of the wide open fairways without fear,.. once ..that's all you'll need.. and then go somewhere else for your second round of the day.

The most fun I've had there was when a buddy got into a port-a-john on skids and we waited a little,.. and then pushed him about 15 yards with our cart.. that's the best memory I have of the place.. still yucking after many years..

Re: Palmer Courses, played that one before it went private and seem to remember it fitting the Southern Pines/Pinehurst blurrr factor.. similar topography produces similar holes in the area.. I believe its on the itinerary for us this year..  I've always liked playing AP's "The Carolina" by the airport..

Mid-South was an enjoyable course...half as fun as Tobacco Road, and twice as fun as Legacy.  It has a nice mixture of holes and is pretty challenging, about half as challenging as Tobacco Road, and well, you get the idea  .  Overall, if you get the chance to play Mid-South, or whatever it's called, play it.

McCloskey - just book your tee-time at Tobacco Road right now...you won't regret it.

By the way, I fully agree on Tobacco Road.  Some of the shots you have to play there are completely unique to that course.  How about that opening tee shot between the pyramid mounds?  

The only thing I didn't like about that place was the artificial turf on the range.  But that minor quibble is buried beneath many memorable shots.  Oddly enough I played my best round of the entire trip there; it's quite an exhilarating feeling keeping a good round going on that course.

The little clubhouse/pro shop is phenomenal, too.

That must have been a temporary thing due to weather, as they have always been grass when I've been down there (maybe 25-30 times).  It would be nice if you could hit driver (or 3w) since the opening shot requires a long shot.

What about Pinehurst #4 and #8? I think they both deserve consideration. #6 re-opened on Feb 14 with new greens and several new tees. The original Forest Creek is right up there at the top of the list as well. I have only seen the new course which had a "soft" opening this fall. My understanding is that is spectacular, better than the original course.

I played the original Pinewild Course (Magnolia??) and thought it was very good. I do not know anything about the second course.

I've played Little River a few times.  I'd put it in the second-tier of courses down there.  Some very good holes, but they get offset by some very bad holes (as if they ran out of property) and a few holes that have to content with large environmental areas.  LR was up for sale recently, but not sure of it's status.

The consensus is that #4 is better than #8 (it will dual-host the US-Am w/ #2 in '07 or '08), but I've always felt like they were trying too hard to immitate a Ross course but fell short.  And for the large greens-fees ($200+), I've always felt like there were much pretty values in the area.  I never saw the original #4, so I can't speak to how good or bad Fazio treated the land.  It's definitely a polarizing course for folks that saw the original.
