....golf my way [or yesterday]
« on: February 27, 2005, 07:47:59 PM »
Played a round yesterday with a 72 year old family friend, and to accomodate our difference in skills and to create a match, I played him even but used only two clubs .....both pre 1870, wooden spoons, bone sole plate, no metal on either club.
one goes 200 yds max and the other I used only previously to putt and chip with [but found on a par 3 that it maxes out about 150 or so ]....two years ago I tried to challenge Ballybunion old with a more complete set of 5 clubs , but I broke two while only having two bogeys all day.
Anyway....I had a great time, inventing and feeling almost every shot....there was no way[ because my greatest loft was about 18 degrees], to get out of bunkers but to go back or sideways....a full one stroke on most.
Every thing was on the ground, if there was a carry I went aside it and over......played from the whitish tees and shot 44 on the front and probably 47 on the back....spent part of today reshafting the old whippy driving spoon with something stiffer, and fixing my [I guess] 7 ironish spoon.

...my new goal is to break 90 [95 ;)] at Pebble this april.

and if need to, I might just have to play it barefoot and in a great kilt .....or maybe pampooties [eh FBD ?]

...not sure if this ramble rates a topic or a post but alot of things I have been sure of, sure weren't.

I was just looking at hickorygolf.com and daydreaming about buying a set of five or so hickory sticks...............

It's interesting there are so many hickory tournaments around.

Bill ....I agree but it seems that most are playing not in my era [archaic to maybe 1870], but around Bobby Jones et al.

...wish I could find someone to play with :'(

...there was no way to get out of bunkers but to go back or sideways....a full one

That is awsome, and it resonated most when you describe playing sideways from the bunkers.

I do have to say it was also very cool seeing Toms make back to back eagles yesterday.

Fortunately we can pick and choose what equipment we play, or at least some of us can.

Cheers

Paul, if you start poking around hickorygolf.com, you will find quite a few older clubs listed for sale.  Not sure there's any all the way back to 1870 but could be.

Brian.... I have 6 new gutties which I reserve for special play, otherwise I try to use the softest ball available.
....these clubs can be quite unforgiving [the old rock flight feedback]....
