Is the 6th Hole at LaCosta; The 14th on the North?
« on: February 26, 2005, 09:13:59 AM »
They showed a graphic of this hole yesterday. It looked like it could be one hell of golf hole, using the reparian to create a wonderful risk v. reward type situation.

But as it is, the fairway is cut, right, away from the hazard left, and trees guard the inside leg.

For anyone who knows this course, am I seeing it correctly?

Adam,

Before the recent distance explosion this hole was a full out driver for most; only the longest considered 3W off the tee to avoid the hazard. To my knowledge no one ever tried to carry the creek to the far fairway. After just witnessing players drive the green on #6 (something that was never tried until this year) I'd say it is now possible. Surely Dick Wilson never envisioned people driving it over that creek originally, a carry of well over 300 yards.

The hole is #14 on the North and the composite tournament course.

I think there's a bit of hole-confusion going on:

#6 (#15 South) is the short par-4 which became drivable due to the tees being moved up. On that hole, the fairway is cut well away from the creek, with trees on the inside of the dogleg.

#14 (#14 North) is the long par-4 with the graphic posted. On this hole, the fairway is flush with the creek, with no trees in the way. Nothing blocks the carry to the far left fairway, except for the distance.

I'm with you Matt, still confused that is.

Why didn't Wilson bring the creek more into play, on this hole? Was it the resort aspect? It seems odd to reduce the natural hazards affect on the strategy of playing the hole? I.e drive it closer to the hazard, have a better angle in.

In this case I can plainly see that the prefferred entry is form the right side, which gaurantees flirting with the creek isn't even an option.
