Tom,
Did I at least get the payroll part right ??? :)

BTW, how much of a difference is there between the originals you sent friends, and what ended up in the subsequent editions?

I think it would be irresponsible for the Confidential Guide to be reprinted, unless such a reprint was an updated version.  There must be dozens of courses Tom reviews which have changed dramatically since Tom reviewed them for the 1996 edition, my home course being one of them.

To do an update would be a massive task, requiring years of travel.  Probably not worth it.

Tom:

I'm in for one of the "basement books."  Where do you want the check sent?

Sean,

I enjoy strong opinions on all sorts of subjects, particularly when these are different than mine.  But whether it is a guide book on golf or African safaris, I prefer that the opiner have a bit more experience on the subject than that gained by a quick pass through the property.

Tom can correct me if I am wrong, but I think that he writes about a number of courses that he has not played nor spent much time on the site.  Perhaps too he devoted more time to courses he was predisposed to than those that didn't quickly command his eye (The Golf Club a 9, Scarlet a 5;  Valley Club 7, Torrey Pines South a 3; please!).

In fairness to Tom, I don't think that the book was written for wide distribution.  It was meant more for his inner circle, and I doubt that he intended it to be taken too seriously.

BTW, is there any doubt about his high regard for Pete Dye?  I wonder if a Dye course could be in the mix some day at Bandon?

I had been hoping to finance my daughters college education by selling my "basement" edition some day to one of you guys. So much for the perceived value of those versions once the marketplace is "flooded" with another 100 of them.   ;D

Seriously, I encourage all of you to help Tom clear out his basement clutter. The 1994 version with no pictures is one of the crown jewels of my library, and I think you will all agree that it is a "must have". Then we can start negotiating to see who can get the lowest "number" of the 500 copies  ;)

Doug - good call.  Did it strike anyone else as oddly beneficent that TD is selling those for only $100?  Good lord, if the 1996 with pictures version gets $350+ on ebay, one can only guess what those 1994 versions COULD go for, due to collectible value... no?

Sorry if I just screwed you guys who want one.   ;)

Like many of my golf books, mine is in bloody awful shape.  I'm not much of a collector, but they do get read.
