Rule 28 requires that (unless you go back to the place of the original shot) you drop the ball within the hazard (normally resulting in a plugged lie).  Why not give the punters/hackers a break and let the (us?) drop outside the hazard?

Because golf, like life, was 'never meant to be fair'... ;)

Washed the people coal-black from the hole in the ground.

Pat,

I don't think bunker depth is much of a liability issue for an architect.  On land with some elevation change you can build a deep bunker that still allows grade level access into the bunker.  There were some issues I had that caused bunkers to be somewhat shallow but I am over that now and you will see some deep to very deep holes in the ground for a while at least...and with grade level access at the low point.

Pat:

I agree with Kelly. Why do you think deeper bunkers should be considered a liability issue today? Do you think some pathetic yahoo is going to get vertigo on the top of some deep bunkers, lose consciousness and topple into the bunker and hurt himself?

You should begin to think more like George Crump did when some hacker he was playing with at PVGC said to him;

"George, why in the name of common sense did you build these bunkers so high? If I fall off here, I'll break my neck."

To which Crump responded:

"Now you've got it. We build them so high that dub golfers would all break their necks. This is a course for champions, and they never get into trouble."
