An interesting web site for a golf course

This is an inexpensive semi-private course in Summerville, SC (just inland from Charleston). I really like the way they have their web site set up. The above URL is the first hole of their "18 hole photo tour" of the course. For each hole they give you several views, typically tee shot, approach shot and most importantly looking back from the green. There is also a paragraph of advice on where the trouble is and on a few holes they even show the club pro playing the hole. I'd guess that's not trivial or cheap to have produced but it sure makes you want to go play the course (at least sitting here at work wishing I were on a golf course somewhere).

I have not. Some friends from up north are coming to visit this weekend and we're going to Charleston to avoid what looks like some unpleasant weather here in Columbia. Today I was casting about at the last minute to find a substitute for the course we were going to play here in town on Saturday and found the Legend Oaks web site.

I don't know if it's just the nifty web photo tour or not but the course looks very interesting to play. For 21 bucks it ought to be a hoot. We're going to just meet up at the course Saturday afternoon, play golf if the weather's not too bad and adjourn elsewhere for drinks and b.s. if it's cold, windy and pouring rain.

If I get to play it I'll report back as to how reality matches the pictures. They at least try to give the impression that strategy matters.

It's been a few years, and my memory of the course is vague, but I played Legend Oaks and recall enjoying it. I remember the atmosphere as very "country", and some simple holes that were quite interesting.

I think the course was designed by Scott Miller (?), who reportedly had worked for Pete Dye somewhere previously. The grass face bunkers throughout the course sorta lean toward a typical Dye style, I guess.

For $21, you can't go wrong with Legend Oaks.

I believe the designer's name is Scott Pool, probably the guy you were thinking of.

Looking through their picture gallery, it appears they have some sort of caddie program. I'm not sure I like the looks of this guy who is supposed to raking that bunker, I guess. Either he's drunk or just out of it. I still wouldn't want to try and stiff him on the tip.

Brent - This is a nice website. FYI... believe it or not, sites like this are relatively inexpensive. You can usually hire someone to design the graphics and lay out the page format for a few hundred dollars. After the site is designed, there are numerous website hosting companies that will host a site such as this for only 200-300 dollars a year. Most people think that maintaining a website is expensive. Not any more. $1000 a year will provide a top flight host with virtually unlimited data transfer.

I don't know why more courses don't do something like that. Admittedly you need someone to take good-quality photos, three or four per hole. But most courses do a lot of that kind of thing anyway for brochures and ads. I know that going though the course tour has me eager to play the course and I might not feel that way if it were just another course with a picture of a pond, a clubhouse and a list of green fees.
