Serious Threat to Musselburgh

Generally I'm all for 'development', but if this proceeds it will be nothing short of a tragedy:

Martin:

Are there no alternative sites for a race course near Musselburgh ? As I remember when one leave the town headed east there is a good deal of undeveloped land.

Musselburgh is one of the great historical treats in all of golf. It is also a pretty good test. I would hate to see it relegated to the same fate as Princes.

And what is to happen to Mrs. Formans?

Michael,
Heading East from Musselburgh, all one might encounter are 'auld watter meadies' and suchlike, which might be ideal for racing horses (and walking dogs) upon! ;)

Maybe the members at Royal Musselburgh could gift the Racecourse their land at Prestongrange and move back to the Links? If only...

It also amazes me that they are even talking about it being an 'all-weather' surface which could presumably be built practically anywhere. I despair.

Musselburgh could well become a victim of its location. Downtown and next to the sea is pretty good.

How long have the race course and golf course co-existed?

It is ahrd to believe that one of the original three venues for the oldest Championship in the world could disappear. Has the R&A made any overtures?

There has been Racing there only since 1816. Young whippersnappers!
The Musselburgh Club was officially founded in 1774 but golf had certainly been played over the links since way before then!

No word from the R&A as yet as far as I am aware...

Martin, thank you for posting this. i think we should all send letters to the Scotsman protesting the distruction of this most historic course.

Other than it's age and the pub at the turn and the quirkiness of playing in the midst of the GGs, is there anything about Old Musselburgh that is worth preserving?

If not, why not restore the Leith Links if we really want to preserve some history!

Rich, there are few really good holes at Musselburgh, including the long par 4 that plays to a super green right beside Mrs. Formans and two good long par 3's.  Sure there are a couple of throwaways amongst the nine but it remains a GREAT value and worth preserving for that reason alone.

Brother Richard,

Blasphemy I say! "This is one of the places golf was born, and it has been the venue for the Open Championships six times." What's next, taking down Prestwick?

PS Although it's been 15 years since I visited Old Musselburgh, it remains a vivid memory--and there are some good holes and fun, old small greens there that were worth seeing.

Best,

Matt and Doug

Having never played Musselburgh I'll defer to your esteemed judgements.

Maybe I'll try to get out there before the dozers arrive.....

Rich I did not play a round there but did go have a walk around it and hit 4 or 5 shots as the sun was departing post haste.
