I too thought that the bottom of a wash was a strange place for a golf course, but in defense of Moriarty and Rustic, I can remember a spring not too long ago when a fair number of courses in the Massachusetts snow belt were, because of ice damage, dealing with greens that were black, rotten, putrid and otherwise shot to hell. It took until June for some of these greens to acquire a semblance of playability.

Sunday   3 degrees, 21 inches of snow, winds 35 gusting to 60

Okay, what is the English version of the Communist Manifesto?  I have an idea, but I'd like to hear it from you.

TEPaul,

Like I said, I know nothing about him, so I'll defer to you regarding the spoilt rich kid . . . .  he must be a really rich kid if he has lost his malibu home in to a mudslide four times in the past decade.   Perhaps you were watching the fantasy channel?

Patrick,  The last election?  I dont follow?  It depends upon where one lives in California, but overall we voted for a moderate in the last presidential election, and in the last governor's election as well.

These days a golf course below the foot of a glacier might be a perfectly safe location . . . All of our continental glaciers are rapidly receding and will likely be no more before too long.   'Moving at a glacial pace' might have to take on a new meaning.

The mudslide in La Conchita was a disaster for the few hundred people who live there.  The other 99.9999 percent of us fared much better.

Geez Joe, relax a little.  No need to get worked up or defend yourself; after all it was you insulting me, not visa versa.  I thought your potshot at me was funny if only for its Duranian gratuitousness.

And while I did aim my post at three posters, I dont doubt that it applies equally well to many others.  If the shoe fits . . . .

The post was intended to relate to golf course architecture by mocking the habit we sometimes have of failing to fully comprehend a circumstance before haughtily opining.   The message was obviously missed by some of those who posted here and that is my failing a communicator.    But such is the pitfall of irony . . . if everyone saw through then it wouldn't irony, would it?

Oh well, if at first you don't succeed . . . .

You are correct, redanman.  It wasn't parody at all (satire was TEPaul's word) but was really an attempt to sincerely suggest that the entire East and Mid-West could overcome all of their winter woes if they would just implement the same extraordinarily expensive remediations as tiny Aspen Colorado.    Your suggestion that I plan a trip out of "the valley" and to Denver or elsewhere in the Rocky Mountain West is a good one, as I obviously have no understanding of what goes on there.  I'd like the trip to be not only educational but recreational as well, so if anyone knows when the surfing is best in the Rockies, let me know.

DavidM reports;

"And P Drake, let me try to explain this to you.  My post was not meant to be taken literally.  To the contrary, I attempted to use a literary tool to mock the condescending attitude of a few of the posters (named above) with regard to California's recent flash floods."

So you see P. Drake, this thread is apparently not to be taken literally or seriosusly---it's nothing much more than DavidM's self-admitted version of West Coast/Midwest/East Coast "mockery reciprocity"!    ;)

P. Drake, Tom P is absolutely correct.  Except that my post was intended to be absurd.

For the record:

I don't know that Rees Jones and President George W. Bush are friends.  I thought that this was a tongue-in-cheek post, and since these two smart, affable, and most accomplished of men are whipping boys for a number of GCAers here, I was just trying to build on the levity.  Having said this, knowing what I do about these two highly respected achievers, they could very well be/become good friends.

As to Dr. Moriarty, I must confess that I have ambivalent feelings toward the guy.  On a personal level, I can't help but to have a warm personal regard for him.  No insinuation was intentionally made by me that he is not a good family man.  To the contrary, my personal experiences with David point exactly to the opposite.

On issues having to do with politics, economics, golf, and golf architecture its entirely another matter.  I acknowledge that the man is intelligent, well trained as a litigator, and inescapably chiseled philosophically by his upbringing.

Not being a utopian or an idealist by nature, I have a difficult time understanding where David is coming from a good bit of the time.  I do trust that his intentions are good however much I may think that he is full of it.

I am concerned about David's state of mind from the standpoint that while he is such a liberal/"progressive" in his political philosophy, he appears to be an iconoclastic conservative when it comes to golf.  Such dissonance must be tearing at the very essence of the man, and may in part explain his aberrant behavior.  :)

All kidding aside, I always welcome the opportunity to play a round of golf with Dr. Moriarty.  Though I've never played well in his company, the several rounds we've shared have been entertaining.  The man has a remarkable repertoire of shots encompassing all points of the scale.  Like Rihc Goodale, he probably would be a happier person living in Scotland.

I did find it interesting that in NC hog farming country they have had 3 "100 year floods" in recent years.

Guess they miscalculated, eh?

This could simply be a matter of the true random nature of nature and the difficulty of applying statistical analysis.

Brent Hutto could do a better job explaining this, but, just because 3 "100 year" floods occured in the last few years doesn't mean that they weren't "100 year" floods. What if the next 300 years doesn't produce a similar flood?

And last time I checked, it was Ben who was sportin' the W hat, not Rees. :)  My money is on Rees being an old blue blood lib. ;D
