Exactly.  Except for the putting surfaces themselves what is so different about the examination at most US Open course setups?  Drive into a 22-25 yard fairway where the rough might be the ideal angle so its taken out of play. If the course has no ideal angles anyway then the exam is the same as a "superior design" where the strategy is lost by the setup.

Let the USGA take their show on the road and all over the country where they can make money.  Who cares.  Its better then further butchering Riviera.

Even this year at Pinehurst where they will no doubt hail the chipping areas I ask if the real preferred angles to those greens will be in the rough?

Brad;
I am sure glad that at least "one person" around here can "tell it like it is" regarding TP-S and the routing there.......how could an architect "not hug the coast" when you already had Pebble Beach, Cypress and the like to compare to......

P "diddy" Drake;
What other course did you find noteworthy on your stint in
L-O-U-I-S-V-I-L-L-E ???

As for the USGA.......they get more and more "adventuresome every time they decide to "take the Open to the people"....you think TP-S was $115 or so before the open, wait til' the year after, likely a $250+ fee for the non-resident for a course that quite frankly, if given the oportunity to play a "Real Life Golden Tee Design" versus playing at TP-S, I'd have to say I'd at least try the Golden tee effort first!!!

Cheers

TP may not be the best venue, but is it really all that bad for the USGA to have 2 public venues (please don't tell me Pebble & Pinehurst are public :))?

I think the USGA was motivated more by the desire to have a modestly priced public venue than the extra money from corporate tents.

Couldn't help noticing how long the fairways were today in the final round - balls almost seemed to be sitting down when the camera closed in, and tee shots seemed to have little or no roll, even with the driver.

Perhaps an effort to preserve length?

as far as Louisville, I've tramped around Audubon and Lousiville CC........2 good member courses.........nothing of note, even though I wonder how much Travis is left at Louisville CC.

You would have thought listening to Faldo about Tiger's swing that Woods was hitting it all over the place. I suppose he was, in a way, esp. that amazing approach to the 18th. But maybe it's time to give Tiger credit for his  course management. Last year was one of the greatest seasons ever for a guy who had trouble finding a fairway. This year is starting pretty well, too.

How good is it?  The prices skyrocket and it's almost impossible to get on, not to mention the poorly received Reestoration at TP-S.  That's a good thing?
