Crenshaw & Coore at Barton Creek
« on: January 20, 2005, 07:15:26 PM »
Friends just mentioned they want to go play with us at Barton Creek next year.  Given all the interest in C&C here, I'm sure somebody can give me the lowdown on their course at Barton Creek.

I'm a big fan of their courses at Cuscowilla and Talking Stick North, what is special about Barton Creek?

What about the other courses there?  What's the deal and what is best to play?

Bill - the Fazio course, Canyons, blows away all the other Barton courses.  Fazio does a particularly good job with the par 5s at Canyons.  The property is more expansive than the other Bartons which may explain the bolder design.

The CC course at Barton is early CC and could be termed CC-lite.

I really enjoyed CC at Barton Creek. A few years later I had the opportunity to say so to Ben Crenshaw. He told me they tried to build a little course that one could "roll it around." They certainly succeeded, and you will have fun doing so.

But don't go there expecting a Talking Stick.

Barton is a nice resort.  It's a good hotel with all the appointments, nice lounge and restaurant and 4 golf courses to boot.  I'd prefer Barton to some other multiple golf course resorts like - Doral, LaQuinta and the Disney.

Canyons is probably the best of the Barton Creek courses.  The C&C course is a nice course with some fun shots.  The original Fazio is okay.  The Palmer course is about 30 minutes from the main resort and is fun to play and is rarely busy.

Non Barton Creek options include C&C's private Austin Golf Club (next to the Palmer course); Spanish Oaks (private--Bobby Weed) -- probably my favorite Austin course; Austin Country Club (Dye);.

Publics include ColoVista 20 miles east of the airport; Circle C by Jay Morrish just south of downtown.  Good course but conditioning can be a problem.  North of town is Star Ranch that receives a lot of play.

Let me know if you need any more info.
