Is it really gonna happen...
« on: January 21, 2005, 09:10:04 AM »
I was watching the telecast of the Buick Invitational and I was thinking....

How in the world could they play the US Open at Torrey Pines South....

How could the ridiculous pond in front of the 18th can be the main feature of the last hole of the Open...

I was trying to visualize the course with some tall grass and everything and still, I wasn't able to figure out how are they gonna do it...

Call another architect, change the venue...

Watch the telecast and try to visualize... Good Luck

I really don't know anything about the specifics of Torrey Pines selection as a US Open venue, but it seems to me the decision had more to do with getting an Open to southern California, and to another public golf course following the success at Bethpage than the actual quality of the course in question.

An unfortunate decision in my humble opinion as well, Philippe.

Not being a dicknose that galavants around the country only playing the finest private courses....I must say that I am proud that the Open will be played at Torrey...It is an excellent tournament venue played by every type of golfer imaginable from all regions of the earth.   Hell, Bethpage is probably toughe to get on than Winged Foot if the truth be known.  If I could get choked up watching Daly win the Buick last year...I'm sure I will enjoy the Open in 08.

What exactly is wrong with 12 thru 17 at Torrey anyway...how does that finish compare to Olympics from an Open spectator or participant point of view...When you are done with that feel free to compare the 18th from each course..

Mingay is right; it's about the site, not the golf course.

Is there even a weak argument to be made that the Open at Torrey is a bad thing for golf.....I can't think of one.

and Mike...I am a dicknose that plays many of the finer privates around the country but you will not find me galavanting to do so..

When I played Torrey last year, my feeling was that it could be set up to be near impossible, even for the pros.  While I liked the golf course OK, it was mainly because it was just plain difficult.  There was very little strategy involved, which for the USGA, may be OK since they are trying to protect par over everything else.

I have not played Bethpage.  From the tees they played the US Open, is there really any strategy, or is it a test of how far and straight you can hit it.  Because that is what I feel that the Open at Torrey will be.

I should be so unlucky as to play most of my golf at TP-S.  I am sure that there are many better courses, but why shouldn't TP-S hold the US Open?  Is it about identifying the best player or the best course?  Nah, let's just hold the nation's open in or around NYC in perpetuity.  God knows that there is not much golf worth playing elsewhere.

I agree with Lou 100%, NYC is much more convenient for me than San Diego anyway. ;D

Its gonna be a par 70. Which par 5s get cut down? I assume 18 will be shortened so Devlin's Billabong gets in play.
Does the dogleg 6th, or the ruler straight 9th get downsized.

Phillipe,
Am I supposed to get all bent out of shape here (like you did with me) because your really dissing a SoCal course? (since my anti-Canadian rant went over your head like an Avro Arrow at top speed! ;))

You won't get a argument out of me about TP though. I think they should be holding the US Open at somewhere like Capilano or Jasper--rename it the America Open. (That does have a certain ring to it doesn't it!?!?! Maybe I better copyright that quick before some ESPN or NBC executive like Don Olymeyer sees it and decides to create such a tournament!
