Where are all the California guys today?
« on: January 10, 2005, 01:08:27 AM »
I've been in LA / Palm Desert since Friday, and could not resist taking a dig at the California contingent who always remind us northeasterners what perfect golf weather they have during the winter.

It's raining cats and dogs here; I should have gone to Bandon to play some golf!

We are all waterlogged and I spend a portion of the morning unblocking rain gutters ...

The LA basin is at 439% of normal rainfall and there is still a few more months of the rainy season to go ... how has Rustic survived?

To give you an idea of how unusuall rain like that is in Palm Desert, the last 4 winters I spent there we didn't lose a single golfing day to weather!

Hell, I say GO AHEAD AND POUR!  If I can't play, screw the rest of you guys.

 ;)

In any case, please remember that SOUTHERN California is where these horrendous storms are occurring.  Up here in the proper part of the state, oh it has been raining off and on, but hell my tournament group played yesterday (and quite enjoyed calling to tell me all about it).  Today it's gonna be 60 degrees and clear.  Another storm comes tonight apparently.  But golf can get played, and does.

...I'm beginning to wonder if all this weather isn't Tsunami-originated.
It's been persisting it down in Scotland for about a week now with Gale-force winds to match...

I don't know how Rustic is this week, but we played there on 12/30 and it was fine. Granted we had a small window, as it began to rain right after we finished. Jeff Hicks seems to be getting a handle on the wash as it goes by #7, so it has held up well thus far this year.

Rain?  How about 10 below zero, 20 mile an hour winds and horizontal snow?

There is no golf in Montana this week. :)

I'm getting a kick watching the national news as California tries to get their rain storms on the "stage"....The poor bastards can't even get the lead with over 150,000 dead from the tsunami.   If there was ever a more bizarre silver lining to a true tragedy I can't remember...

John -

There's your problem, watching the national news and assuming that it is pertinent ... the tsunami was last week's news ... in NorCal, there is concern that the rainy weather may effect the Crosby (re: AT&T) in February ...

I suspect that the lead story later this week will be the Big Wiesy at the Sony in Hawaii ... and if she makes the cut, someone will make the tasteless reference to the "Wie Tsunami" taking the PGA by storm ... ;)

Tom,
Isn't this a perfect time to get a handle on the drainage situation? 8)

Wishing they were in SE TX were we know how to handle drainage..

It was mild 65-70 over the weekend, Sunday was shorts weather and today is going to high 70's.. and I'm heading out to golf this afternoon and tomorrow.. before it cools down again

Laugh all you want, guys, but by next week it will probably be sunny and 70 here while many of you are waiting for the next snow storm.

While it is by no means a disaster, I think this would qualify as real weather even if it weren't Southern California.  By the time this storm passes tomorrow some foothill areas will have received between 2 and 3 feet of rain since Friday.

I am not sure how RC is fairing, but given the burn conditions in the valley above it I'll be glad if there is still a course there come Wednesday.    Looking at the stream flowing into the back of my garage and out the front I will be glad if all my house is here too.

It's not a disaster, but there is going to be a lot of damage from this storm.

We are renting a small house in Monterey Country Club while we're building Stone Eagle.  The course crosses that big drainage channel a couple of times, and last night there was about five feet of water in the channel flowing 20 mph, with huge silt banks on both sides.  If you've got a tee time at Monterey CC this week or next, better start looking for somewhere else to play.

Ed G:  With 250 feet of elevation change from top to bottom, Stone Eagle doesn't have many drainage problems, other than getting the water to slow down enough to go into a grate!

Tom, Where exactly is Stone Eagle, excuse me for my ignorance, but I have not heard of this project.
Thank you

I think we NE'ers better not brag too much.  It was sleeting today here near West Chester (not Westchester) PA.

But it is supposed to be 65 later this week   8)

Up here in the Pennsylvania January, I walked 18 yesterday and it was perfect Scottish golf weather...about 50 degrees, a nice 20mph wind, changeable skies.

It was heavenly.   ;D
