Will the Ocean Ever Lose its Charm...
« on: January 08, 2005, 12:32:53 AM »
Earlier this year it was the hurricanes...now it's the tsunami.   The ocean views during the Mercedes championship just don't cut it this week...rivers ain't what they used to be...is it possible the oceans could follow suit..

Nope.
The ocean is the largest feature on the planet.
"La Mer" has inspired men for eternity.
You may not ignore it's presence.
It is tranquil, it is deadly. It has alway been. it will always be.
At the Crosby, "the AT&T" on the 7th tee at PBGC, someone said to Bill Murray, "Man that's alot of water."
Murray deadpanned, " Yeah, and that's just the top of it."

I wonder what Mark Twain would think about the current state of the American river....His time wasn't as long ago as it seems..

Adam,

How did ignorance and hate bring about the fall of the American Riverfront...

John, do you really think so?  I was actually as impressed as ever.  Besides, the water is not really to blame in these natural disasters, it's the wind and earthquakes that are the root cause.

Jason,

I am disgusted at the images of golfers in a tropical climate...I don't understand why because it is not like me.  My parents and our very own quassi have considered moving out of Florida due to the hurricanes....now this....what is it gonna take....California falling in the ocean.  That would shake some people up..

Geez John, is the rest of the world, a great portion of it that just happens to live on or depend upon proximity to the mighty oceans supposed to now have some sort of aversion to the life giving water?  You of all people ought to be resigned to the inevitablility of the concept of 'what [He] has given is as easily taken away'.  We are just a blip on the geological or eternal time clock.  Enjoy what is there while we have it.  I say old buddy, aren't you at least equally concerned and disgusted that the whole Yellowstone basin is going to blow, and there all those tourist are taking pictures of the geysers and moose?  ::) ;D :-\

I just wish they would quit selling the views like nothing happened.

Barney if it was anyone other than you I would tell them to quit getting hypersensitive.  But I figure you are just trying to provoke.  So I'll bite.

So let me make sure I get this right, because some folks were killed by the ocean now we shouldn't show the ocean on TV????  OK....This week 10 people were killed in SC by a chlorine gas leak, I guess no more swimming events on the Olympic coverage either...This is really starting to make sense to me....While we are at it... My cousin was killed in a motorcycle accident a few years ago (very tragic event in our family) I guess the SPEED network now looses half its programing.

I am still kind of new to this hypersensitivity thing so help me understand, will the permanent ban on pictures of the ocean bring back some of the dead, or does it just assure that mother nature will never make the ocean rise up and kill again?  Also to make it work is it just video pictures, or do I have to remove all the still shots of the ocean off my screensaver as well.  Also is it just those images viewed through electronic media, or do I have to take down my pebble beach painting out in the living room as well?  Again I just want to make sure if I am going to jump on the Hypersensitive team that I know how the rules work exactly.

Thanks,
Daryl

ps I gotta go finish watching the taped Lakers game from last night.  My apologies to the family of Len Bias for being so insensitive as to actually watch Basketball on TV.  There now I feel better I am starting to understand how this hypersensitivity thing works.

;D ;D ;D Daryl, did you use your drivers license photo to post your profile?  I can tell you it is not too comfy outside today here on the tundra, unlike that warm toasty domey thingy in downtown Minnehapless.  I'm not sure Mossy will even come down the tunnel tomorrow and join his shivering mates in the "warm-up".  oooo it's cold out there... ;) ;D 8)

Daryl,

I like to visit the riverfront...I just don't want to build a house there.   I'll get over my aversion to the ocean and its threats and I'm comfortable with the fact that my parents home will be destroyed during my generations lifetime....no big deal.   I just wonder when and if the ocean will become more of a neutral than the huge positive it is today.   Note:  My parents thought the hurricanes would kill their property values...well...somebody just payed a record price for their neighborhood....all I can say is Phuket..

Dick,

I thought you might recognize that photo.  You know I guess I better take it down at least for the next couple days.  I am guessing Moss might not even get off the bus tomorrow.

We are just hoping our Defense gets off the bus and actually puts a hat on someone.  Whats the temp supposed to be at game time tomorrow?  I bet the Pack pulled some strings to get it as a late game.

John, I would have figured that you'd have realized the ocean is always neutral, it is we that change and make decisions that sometimes tragically impact our lives.  Living at sea level with no warning systems or building a village on the side of a volcano.

Guess I bit too.

There is a temporary photo change just for your benefit.

At least until tomorrow evening.

JB- I suppose it was my lame attempt to link the progressive(not socialist) attitude of Twain's works to the ridiculous notion that the devastation was brought on by anything other than natural phenomena.

Once again, Awareness proves to be the vital lesson.

Barney,

I live right next to the Pacific but on the 15th floor of a high rise building-is there anything I can do to make sure I'm safe?  After all, it's raining like crazy in California and I think I'm seeing Noah downstairs and lots of strange animals

Daryl-Yikes!  I haven't even had a drink today and that pic is mighty blurry.  I hope KGB doesn't see that much distortion in his target sights tomorrow.

Barney, where would you rather live and play golf and feel safe?  Monterey Penninsula, Base of Mt Ranier, East gate of Yellowstone, Simi Valley, Palos Verdes, Hurricane coastline- Kiawah Island, Torrey Pines cliffs, or that tornado infested flatlands of Illianna? ;) ;D ::)

I don't think so. The ocean, a rushing river, rugged mountains, a deep gorge or canyon are all hazardous, and have been through the millenia, yet they are all very appealing to man....awe inspiring.

The only disgust I have felt post tsunami is the pictures of people sunbathing on the beaches while people were cleaning up.

As to Hawaii, it is people doing things they normally do.  Just as we all do after a disaster.

To me, the oceans, rivers and lakes all have their impact, as do mountains and other signficant natural features (even the wide open expanses of sky on the prairies), be they on a golf course or otherwise.  They enhance the beauty of the course, create a sense of wanderlust, impress upon you your insignificance relative to the world while also letting you think about what else is out there and your place in it.
