Best walkable course near an airport in the SE
« on: January 10, 2005, 08:57:48 PM »
Any suggestions?? I may sneak away this weekend to escape the snow and the orphanage my wife is conspiring to start. I'm expecting it would probably be Tampa or Raleigh Durham. I'm also on a budget, so no #2, etc.

The weather in Raleigh is supposed to be dropping to the 40s this weekend, but they are calling for sunshine.  Raleigh CC is about 20 minutes from the airport and you're welcome to join me.  The course is a Ross design and is definitely walkable.  The first couple of holes might be a little bit choppy as Richard Mandell is starting some bunker rennovations, but I don't expect them to effect much of the course.

Couple of pictures.

Walk from #1 green to #2 tee-box

Tampa looks like it's supposed to be warmer.  John Cullum lives out that way and can probably suggest some courses.

btw - Raleigh-Durham and Tampa are in the SE, not SW  ;)

Many thanks. I think I may be becoming dyslexic which should go nicely with the ever advancing oldtimers disease. 40 is plenty warm to the English. Let me see what comes up, that sounds like a great idea.

Lloyd,

I'm thinking of getting out myself this weekend...funny weather pattern but Auburn looks good this weekend....The jackpot would be Kinderlou Forrest in Valdosta, Ga....Best weather I have seen without goint too far south..Of all weekends so far this winter this may be the coldest..

John, we have snow here, so anywhere that is not too wet will be fine by me. And cheap flights.. I'm lookin for these right now. Keep me posted if you decide to go.

Lloyd (Barney, too),

You guys have bad timing.  The high temperature for the last two weeks here (Raleigh area) has been below 60 ONCE, I think (yesterday, 52).  We've had a number of days in the 70's, including Wed and Thur of this coming week...then this weekend comes, and it's back to winter (below average, actually), highs in the 40s (but sunny).

I've played 3 times in the last 2 weekends, all with short sleeves.

It'll be 1-5 degrees warmer (high) in Auburn this weekend.

Lloyd,

I didn't mean to mislead you....If I get out it will be with my fat banker cart balling bud who is only on the loose because of Martin Luther King Day.   Brian is a great guy and I would jump on his invite....it might be worth the trip just to see the video monitor that lets you know when it is ok to go....hit that is.

The Nemours course at Dupont CC had a big periscope (or was it a platform?) to see over the hill on #3.  Don't know if it's still there.  Whichever one it was, I've seen both on courses.

How Barney figures Valdosta GA is anywhere near Auburn remains a mystery to me.

Tampa will have good weather. "Walkable courses" -Palma Ceia (Bendelow-1916) is just a short cab ride from the Airport. It's private, but they will accomodate you if referred by your home club. Its worth a play, a short course that resists scoring very well.

If you are going to rent a car, you can drive up  the toll road to World Woods, but they will make you ride, but you could walk Dunes around the corner for less money and as good a course. Its the best bargain in all of FL.

USF's Claw course is in great shape right now, another good bargain, except likely crowded, but you can deal withthat if youre escaping snow.

Where are coming from? I see $59.00 each way airfares advertised in the paper to many northerh cities.

World Woods is all carts now?? I walked a couple of years ago.. I was thinking of there as an option.
Thanks for the ideas. I'm coming from Hartford CT airport, cheap flights are being advertised, but, apparently, not for this weekend.

best part of my round was looking into the TV on that tee at raleigh cc. ???  why didn't they just keep it simple with a bell in the landing area at the bottom of the fairway?  not sure if i asked you that the day i played?

Mike Young's Wolf Creek is very walkable, and very near the Atlanta airport, but the weather crashes here Friday; highs for the weekend will be low 40's, after nearly 3 weeks in the 60's and even into the 70's a couple of days.

I called World Woods. They will allow walking so long as "nobody says nothin."

PB /RO 36 hole rate-$180
PB rate 18-$130
RO rate 18-$95
after 2:00 pm-$45 (you probably wont finish)

Dont overlook Dunes for $30 after 1:00 pm. You guys are sleeping on the best deal going if you pass this up.

North Shore permits walking and is right next to the Orlando airport.  I don't know about "best course in the SE", but it is a very enjoyable Mike Dasher design that is always known for having great putting surfaces.

One suggestion.

Let me second A.G.'s recommendation of Mike Young's Wolf Creek. Lots of very good holes.

And the price is right. No more than 10 minutes from the Atlanta airport.

You takes your chances on the weather this time of year.

Orlando:

Another vote for North Shore

Another club that just opened close to the Orlando airport - Eagle Creek, a Ron Garl design (I haven't played it, though).

Old Memorial is not far from the Tampa airport, a wonderful walk and a stern test.
Gateway is one of my favorite Fazio (Charlie Feely) courses and is also a nice walk, only a 1/2 mile from RSW.
