Sean - yeah. Joyce actually got Ireland to the World Cup, and now he's not doing great for England. His brother was in the Irish squad for this competition too, but I'm not sure if he made it.

Jack,
They're gonna keep all the holes that have elevated tees ,dogleg rights, and  elevated or protected in front greens. ;)
I'll be there in June- a bit overscheduled, but I will try to have a glimpse.

didn't make it, jack...

i used to play with a lot of these guys... there are actually only four non-irish squad members and most of them are well and truly integrated by now... more scottish than the scottish and arguably more english than the english...

Hi all and best wishes from Ireland.
I know St Patricks very well having played and photographed it many years ago.  The courses were interesting being Eddie Hackett's last and one of the few designed by a lady golf architect.  I felt however the designs did not do justice to the wonderful site and were virtually impossible to play.  However my dream was for a top architect to have the opportunity to redesign the whole site, keeping in mind and using some of the work already done as a tribute to Eddie Hackett.  I felt (and still do) it could be the best 27 or 36 hole links complex in Ireland, complemented by 36 over the fence at Rosapenna where Tom Doak and his firm have recently re- done the greens on the back nine of the Old Tom Morris Course.  As previous posts note the courses were built just pre planning difficulties and so this overcomes one of the great difficulties of new links courses.  I was slightly disappointed when I heard that Jack Nicklaus was to develop along these lines but that project like many seems to have run out of money and the land is now just lying unused with some bulldozing work having been done and bare sand left exposed.  In essence that project was overambitious especially in todays economic climate.  Even Rosapenna with a very successful hotel closes the hotel from Halloween to Easter.  I still live in hope that it will be developed sometime as there is the potential for NW Ireland to be a special mecca for links golf with more reasonable prices and great courses

Ballyliffen Old and New
Portsalon
Rosapenna now 45 holes
Cruit Island
Narin & Portnoo
Donegal
North West
Rosses Point not far down the road
Portrush both courses
Portstewart
Castlerock
...and 36 holes at St Patricks

My brother lives in Donegal at present and is a member of Rosapenna.  He did try to drive down to St Patricks recently but found the road impassable.  I will get him to find out latest news and post and possibly some photos.
Regards,
Johnny Browne

I agree with the other Michael...Woodhall Spa.
I know it is a stretch to call it a true Hidden Gem as it is perenially ranked highly, but in terms of actual play it is not high on most American's list when they travel to the UK.
A great trip is to play Woodhall then move up or down the coast...down to Brancaster, Sheringham, Hunstanton and Cromer or up the coast to play Ganton.
Myself...I have a tee time on July 5th at 9.05  at Woodhall, on my lonesome...would welcome any company????

I drove down the rocky muddy barely passable road to St Patricks in september of 2008 and just about got the rental car stuck in some mud when the road abruptly ended at the fence line of the course - had to drive in reverse approx 250 yards until i could get the car turned around

I could see in the distance that no pins were in place on any of the greens and like others have said some of the terrain looked bulldozed and barren and not fit for golf

I will be back in this area in late June but won't think of driving the road to the course unless it has been miraculously paved. I might however make my way down along beach past the Old Tom Morris links at Rosapenna to the seaside holes at St Patricks and try to scale some sand dunes and have a look.

Actuall a true hidden gem is 25 mins from Woodhall Spa, definately worth a visit.

is still MANCHESTER GOLFCLUB in Mandeville Jamaica.    9 holes since 1865.  might be the oldest course in the western hemisphere still open in the same location. the 8th is possibly the finest  par three hole in Jamaica.
