Golf Stats (the sequel)
« on: January 04, 2005, 01:26:58 PM »
Jaime Diaz does a terrifc job of digesting some the the new Shotlink data at:

http://www.golfdigest.com/newsandtour/index.ssf?/newsandtour/gw20041224diaz.html

It's interesting that the stats usually published in magazines had almost zero correllation with performance. Or maybe worse than zero. Example: Jeff Brehaut ranked highest in combined driving (distance/accuracy) and failed to keep his card.

OTOH, some of the Shotlink data does correllate. (And in a way consistent with the old Cochran and Stobbs data from the British PGA in the early '60's.)

Well done. We seem to be getting somewhere at last. I only wish that Shotlink data was easier to access.

It seems to me that this article only scratches the surface of interesting analysis.

A few thoughts I have include:

For the average distance to the pin stat - use median rather than mean.  One bad shot will throw the mean way off.

Create an average number of strokes to hole out score from various distances and locations.

Provide some information about the variability of certain statistics

Provide an easy to access source of the best, worst and average in the different categories.

Jason -

Yes, the article only scratches the surface.

But for the first time ever there seems to be a surface to scratch.
