Dave -

MB is not as seedy as Tampa, but it is still a lot of fun. As for golf, I would go with Naples as the weather is better there than than Tampa. Night life not as good, but, hey, I have a 3 and 5 year old now so what's a night life?

I watched that HBO special again the other night, awesome stuff you guys did!

Brian,

Stagger Lee is a solid 8.  I prefer what is known as Loyd Price's "violent version."  A top five to shag (the dance - not the deed!) to and featured in the closing scene of the movie "Shag" starring a fully clothed Phoebe Cates.

And a very sickly wife.

FWIW, I deleted this post earlier today, robbing Rich of the following punch-line from his post above:

Plus, if you ask a woman in a bar if she'd like a shag, you just might be very pleasantly surprised!

Brad just happened to hit Myrtle at about the coldest it ever gets there.  Here, too, it was about 25 degrees below normal on Monday.  Today, 60-62.

Today in Myrtle:  66 degrees, tomorrow 70.

Mike,

"Sixty Minute Man": perhaps the origin of the later term "Rock & Roll", supposedly coined by Alan Freed.  A very nasty song for the early 50's.  If "Saffire - The Uppity Blues Women" were from an earlier generation, they should have met Billy Ward from The Dominoes, given their song "One Hour Mama" (next line: "So, no one-minute papas", last line: "Don't want no quickies") is a perferct match.   :)

I just read your 12/20 comment regarding Palmetto Bluff possibly being "something original by Nicklaus".
Since this comment seems to be totally out of character with any and all coversations you and I have had over the years, I am just curious about its meaning.
I am assuming that you are the Mark Brown that is the writer/photographer that I have known for many years.  If not, then please disregard my post.

Irregardless, have a wonderful Christmas!

As winter starts to really kick in up here in Boston- I am already getting itchy to go south after the holidays. The question is, how far south will we have to go for a high probability of good weather. Orlando? West Palm? Dominican? Bermuda?  Also, Boston's Logan Airport has  very few direct flights to satellite cities- as opposed to Newark, LaGuardia or O'Hare.
And Happy Holidays to all...

Dave:
Your best bet is South Florida.  Lots of good golf and the best chance for good weather.  Tampa can get incredibly cold.
Naples area on the west coast and Port St. Lucie south to Miami on the east coast.
Fairways and Greens,
Dave

It can be cold and it can be wet and it can be both, but right now it is 50-55 degrees and fairly dry and it is expected to snow (a wee sprinkling--not  Boston sort of stuff) at Chirstmas and then get warmer again......

....when it's warmish and cool it's incredible, when it snows my kids and everybody in the village get out the sleds and career down from the 11th fairway to the 17th green.

On New Years Eve, Scotland puts any other part of the world to shame.  All night street parties in places as diverse as Edinburgh and Dornoch.

Try it, you'l like it!

Anywhere on the west side of Florida below Ocala is safe in February. January is safe below Sarasota. But to a New Englander, anywhere below Ocala is going to be welcomed anytime even during the coldest days we have down here. A cold snap rarely lasts more than a day or two in Tampa.

dsilk,
I'm amazed at how many interesting courses there are in central Fla., many in the $25 to $50 range. If you base yourself in the Clermont area most of anything good is within an hour's drive.
I enjoy the terrain in this part of Fla, it's hilly and feels more like the Carolinas. Even though you're inland it can get windy, and we all like wind in our golf, don't we? Occasionally it gets cool but I've found it lessens the demand and the courses thin out.

I heard evansville IN had 19 inches of snow today. It was 77 on the north side of Tampa today. Sorry about that.

Try Costa Rica.  Just 3.5 hr non stop Delta from Atlanta and now 35 other flights from different airports.

Depends on three things:
how far south are you willing to go?
how much money do you have to spend?
how important is really good weather to you?

If you can relate to all of the above, I would strongly recommend that you consider Cabo, Mexico.
Excellent golf at Cabo del Sol, Querencia, Palmilla, and you can play ElDorado before the course is modified this next year.
The one thing you can count on without question is that the weather will be perfect.   80's days with light breeze and 60's
at night.
Golf is expensive and crowded during the winter, but there are a lot of people that are looking to do exactly what you are contemplating.
If you go, I hope you have a terrific time.   I have on every trip I've taken.

19" of snow ;D ;D ;D ;D v. flat boring courses in Florida ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta
