New Public Favorite: Bayside at Ogallala. NE
A good challenge in a nice setting.  Great views and lots of golf shots to play. I'd recommend it to any GCA'er.

NGLA, TOC, Pac Dunes, and Victoria National for first time visits. Bob O'Link with Shivas for gambling. Sand Hills, PVGC, Merion, and Oakmont for revisits.

1. Winged Foot West
1A. Fishers Island
1B. Fenway

Favorites- Always:

Pine Valley
Merion

Winged Foot West was great.  Every once in a while, even if you think you're playing well...it's good to get your A$$ kicked sometimes, and WFW will surely do that.

My biggest surprise of the year was Fishers Island.  Even though I had heard all the accolades prior, the golf course exceeded my already high expectations.  If there is a more beautiful setting on the east coast I have yet to see it.

Favorite Established Course: Royal Melbourne

Favorite New Course: Barnbougle Dunes

But...........Kingston Heath might have made the biggest impression.........by demonstrating you can have some awfully good golf on a modest piece of property.

And, my heart still lies in Ballybunion....where I only got to visit once this year......that business of having to work for a living can really suck!

Favorite New (to me) in US:  Old Town Club -- A truly hidden gem

Favorite New (to me) outside US:  The Old Course--The greatest golfing experience for me by far.  From wandering around the town to the golf course which was everthing I expected and more.  There is nothing quite like it.

Favorite Old in US:  Merion--18 holes of no flinch golf.

Favorite everyday:  Four Streams--Smyers make you think on every shot and I learn something new every time I play it.

Other than Cypress Point Club:

Most Fun:  Great Dunes (Jekyl Island)

Most Pleasant Surprise:  I rate Spyglass much higher than most.

Favorite Old:  Lookout Mountain

Favorite New:  Members Club at Alderra (so sue me!)

Favorite Hybrid:  Sea Island - Seaside.  

Favorite Replay:  The Honors.

Swinley Forest

Four courses that could not be more different, but each in his in her own way represents all that is great about golf and GCA.

Best played again:

Winchester
Painswick
Brora
Dornoch

The first was just stunning after a 30 years absence--if you can get to play it, do!.  The second held up far better than I would have expected when subject to 20 hardened GCAers.  The third I played in a 4-5 club wind with a world top-1000 golfer--it more than held its own, and revelaled subtleties I had never seen.  The latter, well it wasn't a patch on what it was in August 2003, but no course I have ever played has come close to what RDGC was in August 2003.  This year it was just great, even if not ineffable......

Richard, my heart is shattered. No Dalmunzie? The whistling winds of Glenshee have turned to woeful wails.

  Perhaps if golf courses only had to be judged by 7 holes it would be more valued.

 Also, Richard, not to pick on you, but, are you EVER going to play Brora's "Other Gleneagles"?  It's FREE and you might run into Jimmy Miller! (He lives by the entrance)

Unshatter yourself, Norbert.....

Dalmunzie was 3*** as a total weekend break experience, but the golf accounted for less than 1 of those 3 stars.....

I'll get to meet Jimmy Miller some day--our handicaps seem to be converging, and I'm sure we'll be drawn together in some local Open before long......As for the "other Gleneagles", is it the same thing (or similar) as the practice ground at Brora?  That in itself is enough pasture golf for me these days.

PS--just watched the 1968 Xmas Rolling Stones Circus special, and JT led off.  I wonder what Hank Haney (or James Galway) would have thougt of IA's high left leg lift in the middle of his flute playing........
