David McLay Kidd in Oregon
« on: December 22, 2004, 03:21:38 PM »
Folks: Seems to me there was a thread recently about work in Oregon following Bandon, Pacific and the like.
My Christmas card from David McLay Kidd lists that he is commencing work on a course in Bend, Oregon in 2005. Anyone know anything about it?
It also mentions he's doing something in San Francisco and the new one at Machrihanish, done "in the same manner as Old Tom did next door."
Of course, there is also the new St. Andrews course. Talk about busy.
To me, the biggest risk for Kidd is the new one at St. Andrews, given that everything done there recently, with the exception of Kingsbarns, has been uninspired.

There is a new development going in beyond Broken Top, north of Century Drive (road to Mt Bachelor), but not as far out as Widgi Creek. I assume this is the one Kidd will be working on. It is called Cascade Highlands.
Peter Jacobsen is building one NE of Bend on the slope of Powell Buttes. Part of a development with Eagle Crest/Jeld-Wen.  It will open early in 2006 Link: http://www.cybergolf.com/region.asp?regionID=1&newsID=2396
I am guessing  that another course will be built in the area, with Coore/Crenshaw as the architect, but have zero knowledge of who or where.
Bob Cupp is building a par three course at Sunriver. It will be a nine hole course, holes from 60-140 yds and located east of Crosswater. No cartpaths.
I will edit this with links.

Are any of these opening this summer? I will be there in August.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Cary,
I think both are scheduled for 2006.

The Kidd course is just west of Broken Top Golf Club. To my eye it looks like a very nice piece of ground.

Another course is planned just Northwest in the Tumalo area, another near Eagle Crest in Redmond, and yet another (rumored to be C & C) in the Sisters area. The Jacobsen/Hardy course near Powell Butte is call Brasada Ranch and is under construction at this time. Second course at Pronghorn (Fazio) is under construction also.

Central Oregon is sure to rival other areas soon for most courses per capita.

Anyone have any details about the work in "San Francisco"?  I have a feeling that could mean anywhere from San Luis Obispo to the Oregon border... but still that means within range and hell, any new course is great by me....

The Fazio Pronghorn course will be fully open in fall of 2006, nine holes open earlier in 2006.

John Harbottle has built a new course in Redmond which will replace Juniper CC. Juniper lost its very cheap lease from the Redmond airport. The new course will open in summer 2005 and will be semi-private/daily fee.

Elsewhere in Oregon, John Fought is building a new 18 hole facility in Medford in cojunction with Rogue Valley Manor.
John Harbottle is listed by Tillamook as the architect for their new course near the airport, but Harbottle is not listing it in his projects.

 ;D ;D ;D
I knew it.

As I sit here in Oakland, I can say with great certainty that no one on this side of the Bay takes kindly to being defined by proximity to San Francisco.  As a resident of San Jose, I know the fealing is likely even stronger at home.

But such is our place in the world...  :'(

In any case, this is ringing some bells... Kidd has work going on some course east of here... Darn I can't remember the details but now I do recall hearing about this.

The referenced property for Kidd's proposed course in the east bay is in the hills above Hayward and has been in the works in various guises for over 10 years, and probably closer to 15.

It is a fairly severe site, which has had something to do with the protracted approval period, and I believe has a strong pad-graded residential component.  Of course, I'm not privy to the current plans so that may have changed.

At one time, my former employer worked on this project, then, and Les Claytor from PGA Tour Design Services can confirm or deny this, it was taken on by that entity as one of their designs, to now being looked at by Kidd.

A checkered past and a tough site, but hey, the developers have been tenacious and the views are sure to be magnificent, but I would hazard to guess that it may be one of a growing list of newer Bay Area courses that is built for the exclusive use of cart ball; a walkable course is possible but probably would make for a strong cardio work-out.

AHA!  Thanks, Neal.  There has been a bit of media coverage about this one... I just hope it gets done and I can play it soon.  At least once anyway.   ;D
