David Scaletti's Golf...It's A Funny Game
« on: August 26, 2004, 02:07:57 PM »
I just recently got a copy, and the pictures are breath-taking. Most taken at the hour where the light is perfect, the mood bucolic, and as the Rolling Stones once told us, Every picture tells the story, don't it?

Congratulations David on a great book that's sitting proudly on my coffee table, and where every family member that has picked it up has ooooh'ed and ahhhh'ed at the dramatics of each of the pictures!

If any of you are interested in picking-up a copy, email David @ scaletti@vicnet.net.au

Tommy,

The top picture is obvious, but can you shed some light on the rest?

Thanks for the heads up, Tommy.  Those shots of Carne and Dornoch really take me back.
Does the book come with a little fan to recreate the windy reality of those places? Or some fescue seeds? Are the pages dipped in whisk(e)y?

Tommy,

'Every Picture Tells A Story' was Rod Stewart ("Gasoline Alley" album, I think), not the Stones.

GREAT PICTURES!

David's book represents a nice change of pace amid the madness of life; it is a fine marriage - full of terrific images and wonderful mood-elevating quotes from a variety of sources, such as, famous actors, legends of GolfClubAtlas, renowned sportsmen, politicians, and leading personalities.
It does not purport to examine the golf world, architecturally, but does brilliantly expose a golfer's inner thoughts on the game.

Due to a healthy print-run, Lothion Press has managed to keep the price down to a 'steal.'

Get it for the images, get it for the words: it needs to be on your shelf!

Well, this site is nothing if not a place to get correct information on the things that really matter in life...so, in that spirit, I will totally clear up this matter:

"Every Picture Tells a Story" is from the 1971 Rod Stewart solo album of the same name. The one with "Maggie May." And Mick Waller bashing the hell out of the drums on "I Know I'm Losing You." And "Mandolin Wind." And several other very good songs.

Can I bring this topic back to golf? Not really -- but I played a little par-29 course today and I had the Ramones' "Merry Christmas (I Don't Want to Fight Tonight)" and George Benson's "Give Me the Night" going through my head the entire round. If it had been an 18-hole course, I might have gotten around to "Every Picture Tells a Story."

While we're at it, and Paul just posted, I'd
remind people that The Sandbelt book is also
a treasure trove of great Scaletti pix.  It
inspired me to fly to Australia.  I can't wait
to go back.

Rick: You wear it well! :)

John K: I endorse your sentiment about 'Scatman's' Sandbelt images. Hope you can make it Down Under, soon.

Tommy, thanks for the pics.
For those like me whose jaws hit their keyboards when they saw the Carne picture, here's a LINK to Carne's picture gallery.  Wow.

Tommy and redanman,

I smell the whiff of self interest here. The two of you just want everyone here to see your names published alongside some of our golfing greats.  ;D

I happened to go and see a movie last night and next door to the movie theatre was a book shop.  In the few spare minutes I had I happened upon this book.  I was thinking of posting something about it today but Tommy beat me to it.  My only regret is that I didn't buy it on the spot, though I will get around to it.

The photography exhibited is absolutley wonderful.  My favourites were:

RM notice how the sky imitates the contours of the hole, a one in a million shot.

Carne - I've taken photo's of this hole but the perspective David has taken this one from is unusual and works very well.  In fact I think my ball landed somewhere near where this shot was taken from (maybe he found it for me).

Dornoch - Again a photo from a unique perspective.

Port Fairy - I love this course and have taken a photo from this same spot.

I also can't remember the course but there is another shot of an Australian course that wonderfully contrasts the dry Australian landscape with the hole presented.

A must buy that I will add to my small library soon.

Sean,

It takes the artist known as Photographer to be able to grab that moment. You are correct, David certainly seized the day.

BTW, Sorry to Redaman for not giving proper credit where credit was due. May I be forced into playing golf from the tips while rating and gaining the neccessary contact information for Matt Ward's next visit!

Sean, I would not be too surprised that the contour of the RM hole reflected the sky --- one of Dr MacKenzie's theses is that bunkers would best be modeled after the clouds above!  I'm sure this could be extended to the design of the entire hole.

if you ordered one today it probably won't make it in your stocking by Saturday.  I'd recommend one anyway.  I got my copy today.
Very nice pictures ... that wasn't a surprise.
The quotes throughout the book, that was my surprise, as they are very excellent indeed.
The ones gleaned from this forum are the best ... by far.
Tommy's and Dan King's are excellent in how similar they are, yet also different.
Barney's is my favorite.
Makes me wish I posted more, eventually I'd have a clever quote of my own.
Cheers
Thinking of Bob, Rihc, Bill, George, Neil, Dr. Childs, & Tiger.
