Where does a new englander escape to in jan and feb?
« on: December 19, 2004, 06:48:09 PM »
As winter starts to really kick in up here in Boston- I am already getting itchy to go south after the holidays. The question is, how far south will we have to go for a high probability of good weather. Orlando? West Palm? Dominican? Bermuda?  Also, Boston's Logan Airport has  very few direct flights to satellite cities- as opposed to Newark, LaGuardia or O'Hare.
And Happy Holidays to all...

I'd head to Casa de Campo where there's a million things to do, outside anyway, and a couple of Pete Dye's best courses are, particularly Teeth of the Dog and the new To Dye Fore, along with some new resort courses. You'll forget about everything else by the second day.

If you want more to do at night go to Palm Beach, and stay at PGA National -- play The Champions course, Emerald Dunes etc..., unless you have access to Seminole, Jupiter Hills etc. Another possibility is the Bahamas.

My recommendation would be to hie on down to the Fernandina Beach Municpal golf course! As for the weather, obviously I can't guarantee that unless you want to fly me down there. It's a known fact that whenever I play golf the sun follows me everywhere!  ;)

For guaranteed weather you have to go below the frost line in Florida (vero Beach on the east coast, Tampa on the west coast). Personally I like the Tampa, Clearwater, Sarasota areas. Stay away from the Great Clog in Naples, way overbuilt and $$$.

I usually go to a couple of NHL games. Well, that was before this year. This year I'll just sit home and cry while wearing my vintage New England Whalers jersey.

Try Jupiter Florida, it has lots to offer, excellent private clubs, all you can eat, and a summer of excitement ;D
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Dave;
I'm a fellow BU alum and now living down here in Austin - Central Texas. The weather here has been georgeous and expect to be in the high 60's, low 70's for Xmas.
Lots of very good (not necc. great) golf around here and down towards San Antonio, both private and public (Private: Cimmaron Hills, Spanish Oaks, Austin Golf Club, Austin CC) (Public / Semi-Private: Star Ranch, Avery Ranch, Terravista). Add on low price hotels, great food and inexpensive drink. Flights from Boston get you via Dallas, Chicago and Atlanta within 5-5.5 hours.
Best,
Chip

Not Myrtle Beach.

Arrived last night in a snow squall; today it's 22 degrees and won't get above mid-30s all day. I'm touring about a dozen courses today, and will wait for the weather to warm up to the 40s on Tuesday and Wednesday before playing.

Brad:

You're too damn skinny to go out in weather like that! I think you should stay inside and wait until it gets above 40, at least. We sure don't want to lose you in a freezing snow squal in South Carolina!   ;)

TP, don't worry, I'm wearing a lined, 2-piece rain suit, two sweaters, heavy turtle neck, heavy gloves. The best part is that a perky Myrtle Beach p.r. person will be chauffering me around all day. I'm going to make them drive each course and I'm planning to smoke cigars the entire way! Tom'w playing True Blue and Caledonia; Wednesday it's Barefoot Landing-Love and The Dunes Club. Plus of course late nights exploring all of the areas seediest trends.

Brad:

I don't care what you have on---you listen to me now---you're way too damn skinny to go out in weather like that, particularly down there. Didn't your mother tell you a 22 degree snow squall in South Carolina is about twice as cold as a 22 degree snow squall in New York City??

Brad,

If at anytime you require an administrative assistant or intern, I don't think my wife or my club would mind me leaving....

ANY golf right now would be welcomed.  I don't plan on seeing grass again for about 4 months!!

DS,

Non-stop flights on Delta out of Bradley or Logan into West Palm.  PGA Village or PGA National are good options if you don't have the private club connections.

If you have club connections on the west coast, fly into Fort Myers out of Providence.  Many options.  Golf may not be as strong as east coast but certainly a little more laid back environment.

I do miss the opening song to each Whalers game (and after goals too).

Dsilk,
As another Alum in a warmer climate ... Houston's pretty good this time of year.  While the golf isn't great ... I believe our darker side is much more prevelant than that little shack in Tampa, or so I've heard.

Brad,

Come to Hilton Head. By tuesday it will be about 60 and by wednesday about 68. We need to talk and go play Palmetto Bluff. Nicklaus might have done something original this time, but I can't gurantee it.

Temperature never got above 30 degrees. Fricking cold. Today rode but did not play:

Arcadian Shores
Pine Lakes
Tour International - 27 holes
Myrtle Beach National-King's North
Wild Wing-Falcon
Wild Wing-Avocet
Legends-Heathlands
TPC Myrtle Beach
The Reserve

Weather is due to warm up, so I'm playing True Blue and Caledonia tom'w and Dunes Club and Barefoot Landings-Love. Forget about night life or making any comparisons with Tampa.

It's all for a big article about MB, to be published in Golfweek in late January.

Tough luck on the weather, Brad.  Perhaps a top ten list of all-time Carolina Beach Music tunes?  My votes:

Myrtle Beach Days (The Fantastic Shakers)
Sixty Minute Man (The Dominoes)
Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy (The Tams)
Summertime's Calling Me (The Catalinas)
I Love Beach Music (The Embers)
Rainy Day Bells (The Globetrotters)
39-21-46 (The Showmen)
With This Ring (The Platters)
Carolina Girls (Chairman Of The Board)
Double Shot Of My Baby's Love (The Swinging Medallions)

All of the above are at least a 9 on the Mike scale.

Kindest regards,

Mike

Mike,

Where do you rank Stagger Lee by Lloyd Price?  Is it a classic, or does it suffer from the renovations required by American Bandstand?

You could try Scotland.

It's about 50 degrees at noon, the courses are firm and fast and the beer and whisky are far superior to anything you'll find in the states.

Plus, if you ask a woman in a bar if she'd like a shag, you just might be very pleasantly surprised!
