Oh man, this is all fantastic stuff - many thanks - I type as I look like Igor hunched over the keyboard trying to get the left hand in a serviceable angle...

I am thinking this forced layoff will give me an appreciation of a lot of things.

And I know I am a first class whiner even mentioning this.  :D

In any case Cary, whooo boy did your posts make me see the light!

Mike, you really know how to hurt a guy.   :'(

But hell, after the win over GaTech, the hated Zags deserve to be there.  I'm still content that we own #3.

And to think I almost started to feel bad for you Huckster.  I was even working on a thread about a course with a high CR and low slope...but I guess we'll never know now.  ;D

I missed virtually of the past season due to a serious knee injury (and subsequent surgery) and spending lots of time with my first born, an amazing little guy who has changed my life (and taken all my sleep).

There's no good answer. I got away from the site for a while, but found that I missed my interaction with my GCA friends (even the ones I only seem to argue with). I also took the "opposite" approach and posted more than ever on non-GCA threads. Can't say that one approach worked better than the other, but I can say that the first 18 that I walked after being given the all clear was one of the most enjoyable of my life.

Stop and smell the roses. Maybe visit a course and just walk it (at least you can do that!). Go grab a beer with some GCA friends. Ride the bike and get into better shape. Spend some quality time with loved ones. Enjoy the Steelers inevitable march toward Super Bowl victory.... :)

Pat's right - 6 weeks is nothing. Heck, us nor'easters who aren't fortunate enough to travel much do way more than that every year.

GP - great advice - many thanks.  Yeah, 6 weeks is a blip in the scheme of things and that's why I also related this to winter...

My fear here though is the doctor said 6 weeks is the minimum.  It is entirely possible I have to have surgery if the fracture isn't healed at that point.   :'(

Oh well... the idea of running/walking is a good one, hell I do need to try and lose weight also.  Can't ride my bike too well - can't hang on with left hand.

This is a great time of year for this to happen anyway - LOTS of football to watch and not all that much golf to play anyway.

BTW, my lock bet for the bowl games is Pitt and the points against Utah in Fiesta Bowl.  Utes are not that good.   ;D

And Mike, what do you think I did all weekend?  I am developing a claw grip that would make even Goodale proud.

I should add that if he said 6 weeks is the minimum, you need to prepare yourself mentally for the worst case scenario. When I was progressing solidly in PT in March, I asked my PT when I could start hitting balls. I expected him to say April, he said late July & I felt like someone had kicked me in the !@#$s.

I swear I am going through Piaget's seven stages...

Tom IV --

Piaget's seven stages?

Is it possible that, instead, you are going through Kubler-Ross's five stages?

Here's how to spend the winter: Write an intensively researched essay on the differences (if any) between cognitive development and grief.

Either that, or work on The Claw (tm).

Take it from another one who knows: Coming back is even better when you've been gone.

Dan

P.S. Have you revealed how this break occurred?

Dan  - my mother - a licensed Marriage and Family Counselor - corrected me big time re Piaget/ Kubler-Ross when I tried to use that line on her.  She was ashamed.  But good catch.  And I am now close to "acceptance."  Love that homework assignment!   ;D

And the doctor said this was a repetitive stress thing that usually snaps with one big shock.. that's exactly how it happened for me.. it was kinda sore for a long time, than particularly painful my day at Winged Foot with Mike Sweeney... but definitely not any big deal, until one shot, on what was going to be our 2nd to last hole anyway... didn't hit the ball weirdly or hit a root or anything at all... just an 8iron out of the rough on #9 at WF East... hit the ball, HUGE shocking pain in the base of the hand.  But in fact it was just about my best shot of the day... got it to 20 feet, then one handed the putt in for my only birdie of the day.  Conceded the next hole to Mike when a one handed swing nearly whiffed, halved that match, felt good about ending my short-term golf career on a high note at a great place.

Tom,

That is an awful break I can relate to. I seperated my shoulder playing hockey a few years back in March, and was not able to play till mid-August. Think about losing almost an entire golf season. Mine was 3 months that year.

How do you deal with it?  Is this the time to really study?

Absolutely, but I would study golf architecture writing. This winter I plan on learning everything I can about Canadian golf architecture. I'm so enthused about this that I forgot that I can't play the game.

I'm worried if I do that, immerse myself in GCA study, it will end up just more frustrating as it hammers home what I can't do.

Funny, I find I miss playing less when I'm trying to unravel a mystery or understand the thinking of an architect. The more you get caught up with the architecture, the less you "need" to play.

Tom Paul and I have seen quite a few courses together, yet we have played golf once at Pacific Dunes (when he was still young ;D).

A road trip to go with Tommy to the Ralph Miller library would be a good jump start. Good company always helps.

Ian:

That is sage counsel and I do appreciate it.  And a trip to the reconstituted Miller sure would keep me busy, not to mention be fun as all hell if accompanied by the Emperor, but sadly such is in Los Angeles, nearly 400 miles away!

I do think I will bone up on the reading and study, though - about courses and architecture.  I've found so far that I can get into that - it's watching people PLAY that is already making me nuts.

Ian,
Have you got a copy of James A. Barclay's 'Golf in Canada - A History'?
Great section on early Canadian Architecture with loads of old pics, Plans and drawings...

Cost of doing that in terms of marital chips.... HUGE.

Need in the future for said marital chips because major golf trips are already planned for spring and summer.... infinite.

One weighs accordingly. ;D

Martin,

I have that book and have read it. Very informative, but painfully dry.

I now have a copies of most of his source material. I have access to the entire collection of Cananadian Golfer magazine from 1915-1940. It cronicles everything that was going on at that time.

I have photographed an amazing article from 1896 that details all the first clubs in Canada. I will write on some of this stuff over the winter and post it on the site.

Good call.  I am becoming quite good at that already anyway... It's a wonder the many things one CAN'T do if one is willing to NOT try hard enough.

Tom, a few months ago one of my partners got in to a local club...think "duel".... and has been unable to play golf for the last 6 months and probably for the next 6-9 months due to an injury.  How would you like to get into a place like that and be unable to play?

Mr. Huckaby -

I don't understand your question "how does one deal with winter".

Why does winter need to be dealt with?
