17/18 Back to Back Par 5's?

The thread on short, opening par 4s reminded me of another unusual routing...

Champion Hill in Michigan ends with two par 5's - I cannot remember any other course doing this. I've played it, and its clearly due to the land they have to work with. It's a particularly "challenging" way to end a round.

Will be interested in comments on strategy, etc for this format. Par 3/4, 4/5, 3/5 come to memory as finishing holes, but not 5/5...

Royal Birkdale used to end this way.

The back to backs at Holston can really favor the long hitter, match or medal.

The Rawls Course (Doak) finnishes with B2B 5's running in opposite directions.

Pinon Hills (Ken Dye's Original routing) does also, but they run into the same direction, into the prevailing westerlies. The drive on the 17th was a form of a breather (off the tee) but the winged boomerang green requires one of the most precise shot demands of the day. A test that aptly belongs on or near the climax.

I seem to recall Desert Highlands finishing 3,3,5,5.
However, I am not absolutely positive.

I also recall Meadowbrook CC  near Detroit finishing with back to back par 5's.

Cherry Hills for regular play, though 18 is a par 4 for tournaments (including next year's Women's Open).

The original Box Grove in Toronto, a one time 18 hole championship private course had 625 (17th) yarder followed by a (18th) 510. Even more interesting was it started out par 5 (1st) and par 5 (2nd) too with 14 consecutive 3's and fours. The original layout had only one 3 on the back nine.

This was a course that became the IBM Country Club and then was reduced to nine public holes with both now under houses. This course was an excellent course with the Rouge river crossing 10 times in the round. This could be Toronto's best lost course. I was fortunate to play it a couple of dozen times as a junior for $6. a round!

my course in orlando, orangetree, a joe lee, starts with back to back par fives, 1 and 2...tough way to start in my opinion as you have scoring opportunities immediately and none until the 10th

Paul - I think 18 at Portrush Dunluce must have been called a par4 for at least a little while... the card I am holding from when I was there in 2000 has it marked as such.  But what the hell, when I played it it was darn cold and 18 played into the wind.  It sure FELT like a par five.

It was a Par4 back when I visited in 2000, and appeared to be a Par4 during the Senior British Open...but those old guys don't play the back tees.  They don't seem to have the scorecard on their website anymore, so I'll check when I get home tonight.

And I thought it was like 450yds.  Did they knock down that building and recently add a new back tee?

 Just checked a card from RPR-- shows par 72 from green tees--par 73 from white and blue,but has #18 as four

Further confirmation of Portrush 18th from the website's hole profile:

"In the past decade, the hole has been converted into a 469 yard par four from a par five of some 30 yards longer."

  I'm surprised no one brought up Rancho Park in L.A., one of the few public courses in the city,  host of the L.A. Open for so many years, and then Senior events.  They have a plaque on the 18th tee where I believe Arnie once took a 12.

Yes, at one time Ballybunion ended with the fourth and fifth holes, when the clubhouse was up closer to town.  I think that changed sometime in the 1960's ... when the predecessor to today's large clubhouse was built.

Not quite the answer to the question asked, but the Polo Trace Golf Club in Delray Beach by Karl Litten/Joey Sindelar has back to back to back par fives on the 9th, 10th, and 11th holes.

Other than that little novelty, there's little to recommend it, unfortunately.
