15-year old comments from Frank Hannigan
« on: December 03, 2004, 01:09:00 PM »
With apologies to the USGA for filching this article from their Green Section Record, the following link is to comments made by Frank Hannigan in 1989.

These comments seek to find some understanding of how so much of what he calls "contemporary" golf design differs from the classical stylings so often discussed here.  It is interesting food for thought, if for no other reason than we are still having this conversation today.

The purpose of art is to delight us; certain men and women (no smarter than you or I) whose art can delight us have been given dispensation from going out and fetching water and carrying wood. It's no more elaborate than that. - David Mamet

As much as things change, so do they stay the same! Hannigan certainly is a fine writer!

Was it me, or was he specifically commenting on Pete Dye, when he mentioned the Stadium courses, and and Tom fazio when he spoke on the photogenic courses?

The subtext with the "attitude" about lengthening, also jumped off the page.
