Doesn't matter if it's within 17Mile Drive or not...just give a reason (emotional, architectural, spiritual, etc.)

Abiding by Dave's restrictions.... my vote is for #17 at PB for a couple reasons:

1.  Emotional
Soaking in the history of famous shots (Nicklaus, Watson) while standing on the tee.

2.  Architectural
Hitting to the wrong side and having to contend with that huge ridge that bisects the green.  That ridge makes the hole special and it was the first time I realized how a small detail on a green can overshadow the awesome setting.  My most vivid memory is of that ridge... not the rocks and seals and waves nearby.

Following along with Dave's reasoning,I am a par 3 lover so I will sway towards the excellent threesome of those at CPC,
I think number 3 is awesome in its simplicity, with the short windswept cypress trees back left..and no tricks..minimalist golf at its best.

I also love the seventh, where Dr Mc installs most of his beloved tricks, and of course number 15 for its sheer beauty.

number 5 at Spyglass is a gem especially when played from all the way back, the fromt bunkering is quite superb.

But you did say favourite, so pinned down I will go for number 3 at CPC.

Damn.  It's a great question.. the only problem is that if you name a hole on ANY of the famous courses, it could be called "obvious."

And Dave S., don't think I'm not reading... have you come so far from calling #2 at CPC a nothing, disappointing hole with too many houses, as you once did?  If so I am proud of you as it is a great hole.  If not, I just wanted you to know I noticed your sarcasm.

As for me, it's gonna be any one of the par threes on MPCC Dunes.  Each one seems to have a Huntley story attached to it - particularly #4 - and each one is damn fun to play, each for different reasons.  To those on this board, those holes are obvious.  To the outside world... well I am pretty damn envied by my buddies that I've gotten to play them so many times.

Another one might be #15 at MPCC Shore... my pocketbook likes that hole, as Mike Benham's hates it... that alone puts it in the fave column.

Hmmm... I seem to have a thing for par three holes.  Might require some self-examination.  ;)

I also tend to like the whole back nine at PG Muni, as well as the first two par threes... but all of that might fall in the obvious also.

One for sure not so obvious is #12 at Fort Ord Bayonet, may she rest in peace. (Thankfully this is a par 4).  I say that because the hole as it used to be was perhaps my favorite par 4 in all of California, even including the famous ones... as she is now, she's been so butchered, I can't bear to type out the description.  I nearly weep every time I see her these days.

Brian,

The most stirring, the par three 177yd 14th hole, MPCC Dunes Course.

Brian, whilst you are about it, just think of playing the following eighteen holes at MPCC.

On the Dunes Course, starting at the 10th hole, then playing 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15. Cut across and back a bit to play Nos. 7 through the 16th of the Shore and finish off playing the 5th and 6th of the Shore. Every hole alongside or with a spectacular view of the ocean. Plus a peek at Spyglass and Cypress.

Bob - see my post - 14 is in my list also.  But 4 is as well.  Damn one would have to be a fine stick to make an ace there.   ;D ;D ;D

And that is one HELL of a fun routing over your two courses... tell me have you done that yet?

Tom, I picked holes where making 3 would be possible, but tough. 5 and 10 at CPC are too short and #14 at Pebble will take another 20 years, when drives go 410.

So have you gotten over your disdain for #2 CPC or not?  Stop being a lawyer and answer this like a golfer.

Oh... I see... that's exactly what you are doing....

Well then well done, my friend.  Welcome to the society of appreciators of the great par 5 which is #2 CPC.

Bob,

I think I actually mentioned that routing in a separate thread about great whiskey routes....sounds like lots of fun, but the halfway house comes too early in the round ;)

And thanks for sending along that MPCC newsletter.  Always fun to see your words in print.  If I write a few more, can I get you, Mr.Keith and Mr.Brown to nominate me as an honorary member? ;D

Oh well Bob, you know how it goes... numbers were never my strong suit.

Yes, #14 on the new Shore.  It will live in memory for a long, long time.

 ;D

BTW, I try to forget #18 on the Dunes... not that it's a bad hole, I love it... but I cost a certain someone money there once by timidly taking him as partner rather than boldly going solo, and it remains on the top of my golf regrets.

#4, "Blind Pew" at Spyglass.

I love short par 4's, and this is one of my favorites.
Great approach and an incredible green!

I'm tempted to say No. 1 or No. 18 at Cypress Point -- in hopes of starting a catfight here that wouldn't get expunged!

Not that I've played either hole -- or any hole on the Monterey Peninsula other than the 18 at Pebble Beach. Other than the obvious ones there, I'll take...

No. 4 -- because of the setting, because (unless I'm mistaken) there are a bunch of different ways to play the hole, and because no matter how old or feeble I may become, it'll remain a fun hole to play.

I am going with the short par 4 4th at Spyglass or #1 at CPC. I love the green at #4 and the opening tee shot at CPC is awesome because its CPC.

I'm going to cheat on my own question and throw out a few hidden gems:

#9 at MPCC Dunes
#12 at Pacific Grove Muni
#4 at Pebble Beach

#9 at MPCC Dunes is a fantastic golf hole - great call, Brian.  And playing it with Mr. Huntley you know his warnings about how making a 4 there, which seems so simple, always turns out to be so fleeting... and he's right... darn that hole has a way of turning a good score into a bad one.

#12 at PG Muni is on my list also... it's the highlight of the back nine there I'd say...

But by my reckoning, ANY hole at Pebble falls on the obvious side.  Jeez #4 isn't exactly an unknown quantity.  But it is a great hole, and it surely isn't as famous as the well-known brothers #7,8,17,18... so I'll let you and Kelly slide.

Of course who appointed me judge and jury on this remains another question....

4?  Ahh...how about 3 after getting the "no South African made a biridie the first time around" story!?!  And since it cost him money, I thought it might be the end of my round right there ;D

Damn that's right... you did make a 3... yes, I am surprised you were allowed to continue.  That is the story for that golf hole.

Brian,

It wasn't just a South African that didn't make a four there the first time out, but the following.

George Knudsen, Bruce Crampton, Denis Watson, Bill Rodgers, Nick Price, and as his card announces, the best left-handed golfer in Australia...Russell Swanson.

Well since most of the obvious ones, within the Drive, have been picked, I'll mention some other, less known, yet still great golf holes;

At Del Monte, there's the 7th and I'll add the 14th (simple but difficult)

At Monterey Pines, formerly the Navy Course, the 11th-18th has enough natural quirk to put a smile on the largest of curmudgeons.

Ft. Ord has a handful of holes, on both courses.

Pg's, 11-17, is very tough to beat.

I' ve always been fond of #11 at Pebble.  Love the change of pace, the blindness, the ridge in the middle and the green (best on the course).

With any question of this sort, I think its important to define what the Monetery Penuinsula is. The best definintion I have seen says anything west of Highway 1.

With that in mind for me I would say Poppy Hills #1. Yes I am staring at it outside my office window so there is that obvious connection, but I love the way the approach shot sets up with the ocean visible behind the trees framing the green.

Scott:

Your definition is a good one and unfortunately that eliminates my faves at Fort Ord.  Oh well.... I was also going to mention #15 at Laguna Seca (the par five going over two water hazards) but that's definitely east so oh well....

I guess one's perception of what constitutes Monterey Peninsula does depend on where one sits.  From my house in San Jose, anything past where 156 hits the 1 counts.

And to think that my sessions with my therapist was starting to clear my mind of that hole ...

Others:
#4 at Spyglass ...
#17 at CPC ...

And for a favorite fairway contour and approach shot ...
