Paul:
A number of Flynn courses have some of the most fascinating "loops" imaginable, particularly courses like Lancaster and Kittansett. They're not all necessarily juxtaposed to the clubhouse but they are fascinating loops nonetheless. A few of those old architects even wrote about routing that way. They said things such as men coming to the course after work and being offered the opportunity this way to play little mini loops because there wasn't much time left in the day (likely less play too in those days) as well as the way Crump did it at PVGC (1-4). Tillinghast, particularly, wrote it was efficacious to have the 2nd, 3rd or 4th hole come back by the clubhouse so players who were late for a group could conveniently pick them up.
