Charleston Golf at Thanksgiving
« on: October 29, 2004, 09:58:13 AM »
Heading to Charleston for Thanksgiving and can only play one round (to help keep the peace with my better half). Currentely my list includes Yeamans Hall, Briar's Creek, CC of Charleston, Cassique or the River Course. Have already played the Ocean Course. Appreciate your thoughts before I commence on my groveling mission.

Without a doubt...Yeamans Hall then followed by CC of Charleston.  Late fall is a great time of year for the charleston area, have fun.

James-

I concur with CHC....but all of those course are really good and I don't think you'll be disappointed playing any of them.  From a gca.com perspective, after Yeamans, I think this group would most like to see Cassique.  It's really interesting  how Watson was able to turn a boring site into a fun golf course.  They are playing the Warburg Cup there in the next couple of weeks so access might be an issue.

Strantz' Bull's Bay has received some good reviews here -another possibility.

Yeamans, no contest. But if you're at Kiawah, I like River better than Cassique, which seems too contrived.

I have not played CC of Charleston, but you can not go wrong with Yeamans, Brier Creek, Cassique or River. (I the courses are listed in this order for a reason!

Yeaman's Hall is clearly superior to CC of Charleston.  A wonderful day in nature.  Yeaman's has the best trees of any course I know and not one comes into play.
It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

I've only played the Cassique course of the courses listed and I would agree with others that it is well worth the effort to play. I really enjoyed the course. Watson definitely did move a lot of dirt but he came up with an outstanding course built in the marshland that has some characteristics of links golf. For the most part it is still without residential development and is exposed to the wind coming off the sound.

As an aside, the Clubhouse is beautiful.

I've heard several positive comments from people not on this website concerning Wild Dunes. Any thoughts?
