Tying a Road Hole bunker into the green?
« on: October 20, 2004, 05:20:01 PM »
Should it be essentially ground level so balls could roll into it from ANY angle, or pushed into the green to offer a backstop option when playing shots from behind the green and add height for bunker shots?

Appears to be ground-level:

Brian,

It depends upon the surrounding topography and how the architect wants to integrate or value the strategies.

More than that, Pat... it depends on drainage.

If you dig a deep bunker starting a natural grade, where are you going to drain it? If there's nowhere to drain it, you're likely going to end up with a pond intstead of a sand hazard.

Unless there's 20 feet of sand underneath the bunker's base!
