Southern Cal or is it "Anywhere but Northern Cal"
« on: September 26, 2004, 10:38:28 AM »
I know this is not very golf architecture like but "ANC" would have lost to Stanford last night if the Stanford coach had done anything but coach not to lose in the 2nd half. I have missed time out with you guys on the west coast more than any of you will ever know the last few months. It made my heart feel full just to see the west coast vista's and brought back great thoughts of some many wonderful rounds out over the years. i cannot wait to get back next year. Ok so lets talk about the Stanford Golf Club?

I don't agree with this statement at all.  The fact that they (USC-the true National Champions)  didn't beat them like pilling up the score on Miss State (51-0) speaks volumes about the ability of the Pac-10.  USC really turned it up a notch and I don't think LSU or anybody else could have scored on them in the 2nd half.  Stanford playing at home was 2-0 and has a lot more talent then most people give them credit for.

Tiger, you must have been watching a different game.
Stanford played over its head in the first half, with no margins for error. They got off throws at the last instants, and snagged passes on their fingertips. They even scored a touchdown on a trick play. In short, they were in the zone for that first half.

But, in the second half, SC made adjustments, making the zone and that narrow margin disappear. It had more to do with SC's coaching and Stanford's lessser talent. Not heart. Athletic talent.

I'm a SoCal transplant to NorCal. I graduated from UCLA and loathe USC. But---they were the the better team.

The past few years have been rebuilding years for the Stanford Indians/ThunderChickens.  The post-Tyrone Willingham era (I heard the Ty went on to bigger, greener pastures ...) has not been kind.

Their opening games this year have to be considered a surprise, stomping BYU who stomped on the Irish and hanging with the Trojans.

Hopefully, the redesign of the Sand Hill holes of the golf course also turn out to be a surprise.

To bring it back to gca, SGC is an excellent university course, though a bit repetitive (par 3s), and with a couple of rather average holes.  The green complexes are relatively subtle, but very challenging, specially when running fast.  I doubt that SGC would stand up well as a site for a major college championship.  Being totally objectively, I would rate it a fairly full notch below OSU's Scarlet course.  BTW, I think that they still have more than intramural football at OSU, don't they?
