LenBum is dead wrong.

When wind velocity blows balls off of the green, or the sand from the bunkers, it would be deemed excessive.

Wind blowing the sand from bunkers is a regular occurance here at Kiawah Island.  We actually have modified "street sweepers" that we run across some of the greens after a good blow that sweeps the sand back into the bunkers.  Can't think of too many other courses what have that type of grounds equipment in their garages...

Are the giant greens at NGLA a design detriment when the wind doesn't blow ?  

There are ways to compensate for the winds demise when a golf course has giant greens.  That's probably the ideal situation for greens within greens.

At what velocity does wind transition from a design asset to a design liability ?

I can't wait to find out what the answer is, but in the meantime, perhaps we should have a pool!

Shiv-As for Big greens with zero character, all I can say is Pebble Beach.

In thinking about my visit to the USA's mecca, Nebraska, I enjoyed both WH and SH with gust in the 45 MPH. range. Neiter suffered one bit of detriment. My three wood from 150 yds. on my very first WH hole, came to about 6 ft. of the pin before the wind blew it back to about 35 ft. I can only imagine the cries from others if that had happened to them, while I had a great chuckle.
