Ulverston GC-Then and Now
« on: September 13, 2004, 12:39:10 PM »
If you're in or near the Lake District, golf really shouldn't be a priority.  Although Ulverston is a very nice Colt course over lumpy terrain and scenic.

Unfortunately a crap day for photography.

The course would be better of they stopped planting the bloody Christmas trees.  Now days, some might be necessary for safety but it could be landscaped more aesthetically.  Some are completely unnecessary and block views of the hills and that interesting folly. (Also, compare the trees to the glorious old ones).

Bunker changes are as usual...cleaner, and some filled.  But not too far off.  No more sheep.

Notice the fairway line comparison for a few holes: bunkers in the rough for some of the modern shots.

If you read some of my earlier threads.  You'll recognise the Colt (with construction by Franks/Harris) style around the green complexes...particularly the mounding.

1st green

2nd approach

As it was.

Great long par 4 3rd.  I'd get rid of that barber pole with...no need with that fairway shape!

Closer

Again

Looking back.

Par 5, 4th

Lay of the land green.  Slopes quickly to the right and back to front.

5th

6th in its natural valley.  Notice filled bunkers.

As it was.

Lovely 7th. Another unusual fairway (like the 3rd).

Closer

Green

8th

8th, then.  No comparison.
Trees in modern pic must have been planted for safety.

9th.  A good tree.

Filled traps.

10th

11th

Old 11th. 3rd in background.  6th on the left.

11th approach

12th.  I dislike the evergreen trees.

12th green

13th approach.  Love that tree.

Final par 3.  Filled traps.

Colt liked the diagonal line of bunkers, but not in the rough.

Green

16th green.

General view.

A special drive.  Over a real ruin.

Someone's fireplace at some time.

Approach with the folly.

A closer view of 17th.

Beauty of a finisher down to the bay with a fine building in view too.  If I has decent weather you'd get the real idea!

Looking back.

Paul,

Thanks for posting these pics.  Ulverston appears to have some wonderful movement in the fairways.

The strategic placement of the fairway bunkers is a highlight and the placement of bunkers 30-40 yards short of the green such as the 13th would definitely make the approach visually deceptive.

That is some view from the 17th tee!  How far of a carry is that over the ruins?  It also appears to be quite a bit uphill.

Not far, about 80 yards.  But yes, it's uphill.

It's an old quarry too.  I love the way it all fits...quite different from some of the modern attempts at incoprorating old ruins etc.  These just look like gimmiks.

Paul - great to see.  I wouldn't write off the Lake District for golf - Silloth and Seascale are must plays for everyone.  I don't know Furness but it's supposed to be a good links.  Windermere is like Oban, short but far from easy and very attractive.  Mackenzie designed Grange-over-Sands (some good holes, some bland).  I love Grange Fell a really whacky 9-holer with spectacular views and a trust-the-golfer honesty box.  Penrith is a good hilltop course which has seen ladies' national championships played on it (Lord Whitelaw lived nearby and was probablt instrumental in arranging that).  I saw it only on Saturday as I drove up the M6 delivering my younger son to university.

I agree.  Wasn't meaning to imply the golf is weak.  Just that the walking/hiking/rambling takes prime spot.

Got some good pix of Windermere in good light too.

Nice pictures Paul.

Until I met you, I had this vision that you were an old guy living in a ruinous type of castle in the English countryside. Even though I now know that you are just another Jersey guy sleeping in the same state as Matt, the pictures are still appreciated. ;)

Thanks.

Wouldn't mind that "castle" at the bottom of the 18th.
